ALAN had one winner yesterday and has two each-way picks among his four fancies for Wednesday.
MATTERHORN has been a notable success story this winter, winning four of his five all-weather starts, and is fancied to defy top weight at Chelmsford City. This is a slight rise in grade and he has been raised 6lb for his most recent Lingfield success in early January. However, Mark Johnston’s colt has been winning with seemingly a bit in reserve and Joe Fanning should get a lovely lead from front-runner Michele Strogoff.
WHAT’S OCCURRING (2.15) steps up in trip at Doncaster but with his favoured fast ground prevailing he can edge out chief rival Doctor Dex. What’s Occurring, a dual Hereford winner on good to firm earlier in the campaign, lost little in defeat at Leicester, humping 12st 3lb into third spot behind useful Brecon Hill.
BURN BABY BYRNE plies her trade quite regularly at Ludlow and she was a course and distance winner for Evan Williams back in November (good). The mare has continued to run well and was a close-up third to Bonza Girl and Dinos Benefit here a fortnight ago. Drying conditions will aid her cause.
TREVITHICK (5.10) and Rey Loopy are tightly matched on their previous Newcastle clash, with Bryan Smart’s top weight winning a narrow vote. Trevithick, a confirmed front-runner, was harried for the lead by Rioja Days when caught by Rey Loopy 29 days ago but may enjoy an easier time up front this time round. If all eight go to post he appears a pretty solid each-way wager on an excellent, but difficult, card.
