HAPPY new year to all! Here are Alan's first picks of 2019, both from Southwell.
THE GREAT WALL made a pretty sensational Fibresand debut at this time last year, bolting up by 19 lengths, and he looks the best bet on the card on a return visit to Southwell.
Mick Appleby’s gelding was turned over five days later but that run under a penalty probably came too soon. The Great Wall went on to justify favouritism at Hamilton in midsummer, beating Godolphin’s Desert Frost over six furlongs, and his positive style of racing will have most of his rivals in trouble off the home bend.
BOLD ANGEL was well handled by Kathy Begley to score here over seven furlongs and the filly should cope with a 4lb rise. She has an extra furlong to cover but David Evans has his all-weather string in fine shape.
