THIS is the last weekend of the PGA Tour and the final of the FedEx Cup at the East Lake Golf Club.
If the winner comes from one of the top five in the FedEx standings he’ll claim the FedEx Cup as well, with a cool pay day of around $11.44 million. Not bad.
First of all we’ll look at the Tour Championship. With only 29 taking part (was 30 but Dustin Johnson isn’t playing) it should be a little bit easier to pick a winner than a normal week (believe that and you’ll believe anything).
Rory McIlroy will be an out-and-out favourite this week not surprisingly and although he finished T8th last weekend it was his 11th top-10 finish this season.
You can call one four putt a error of judgment but TWO can only be described as downright careless. Even Mr Fixit doesn’t four putt!.
But Rory will give everything to win this and I believe he’ll turn that around and win this week.
Bubba Watson seems to have come into some kind of form. At the BMW last week he finished a solo second with three consecutive 66s after a 70 in the first round. Impressive and steady golf.
Since his Masters win a third at the Memorial and a T16 at the Greenbrier are the only significant finishes. But maybe his form is coming good at the right time. In his last visit to the East Lake in 2012 he finished a T5th so can play the course.
My third pick is Sergio Garcia again. Apart from a two-over 72 in the third round and that pitch on the 17th which led to a triple bogey eight in the last round he played brillliant golf last week. It’s his last chance for a win on the PGA Tour.
With nine top-10s, two thirds and three seconds he’s had a very good season and it would be great for him to round it off with a victory (apart from winning the Ryder Cup).
While it is the last tournament on the PGA Tour over on the European Tour we’ve still got a few to go, starting with the KLM Open in Holland.
Two names stick out for me this weekend, Brooks Koepka and Paul Casey. The young American had a great US Open, finishing fourth, a T3rd at the Omega European Masters, and T15 at the PGA Championship, so he has some kind of form.
I would love Paul Casey to get back to where he was a few years back. In some tournaments he’s started off well, with some great rounds, then seems to lose concentration and falls back out of contention.
If he can put four good rounds together he’ll be there or thereabouts and looks a good each-way bet.
15pt staking plan
Rory McIlroy 3pts (4-1, 888sport)
Bubba Watson 1.5pts ew (18-1, Betfred)
Sergio Garcia 1.5pts ew (14-1, William Hill)
Brooks Koepka 2pts ew (22-1, Paddy Power)
Paul Casey 1pt ew (25-1, Betfred)

Cycling: Vuelta stage 17
Last chance for the sprinters today. Question is if there are enough teams willing to get a sprint, because Degenkolb is the fastest finisher still left in the race and is not easy to beat. But I think they will and we see another sprint.
I will be on below match-ups, winner in capitals:
FERRARI v Richeze
BOONEN v Ciolek
Double @ 2.44 with 888sport
Ferrari and Richeze are team mates, but Ferrari is the better sprinter. I they want a chance against Degenkolb then they have to do that with Ferrari. He already had some nice sprint results in this Vuelta.
Boonen is training for the World Championships later this month and I think he will leave the race after today’s stage. With 2 mountain stages and a time trial left he will try to test himself in this stage. Last sprint he was second and can’t see Ciolek finishing in front of him.
Pablo Larrazabal, top 3 two years ago at the KLM, shot 3 rounds in the early 60’s last year but one 77 I think it was messed up his chances, likes the course, granted not having a great season but this could be the one and at 66/1 with PP think it’s worth a shout each way.
Twins @ Indians
Indians over 8.5 hits @ 1.83 *WON*
Twins 4-3
Indians only scored 3 runs last night but they had 9 hits to complete the overs.
Pirates @ Phillies
Phillies 5-3
Pirates over 4.5 runs @ 2.15 *LOST*
It looked good early on with Pirates scoring 3 runs by the 3rd inning. However they couldn’t take that momentum forward and failed to score for the rest of the game.
A’s @ White Sox
A’s -1.5 @ 1.86 *WON*
A’s 11-2
Took the A’s until the 4th to get going, but from there on it was a straight forward victory.
Diamondbacks @ Giants
Over 6.5 runs @ 1.83 *LOST*
Giants 5-1
No problem for the Giants here. Petit dominated the Diamondbacks only allowing 1 run and 4 hits. Unfortunately though, 1 run short for the overs.
2/4 and a pretty even day. First game starts around 18.30 tonight, so I’ll be back before then with some more.
I too think McIlroy is the one to beat but I also have a sneaky feeling for Justin Rose at 16/1.
In the KLM will be having small each way bets on Slattery and Horsey – both 66/1, Wattel 45/1, Lowry 28/1 and Dyson 30/1. Dyson finished 7th two weeks ago so his recent form is good. Was also tied 3rd in this event last year.
An offer that may or not be of interest to the Golfing fraternity on here.
The final event in the FedEx Cup playoff series has arrived. The Tour Championship at East Lake features the top 30 players in the standings, and we expect it to be an exciting end to what has been another thrilling PGA season.
