A nice 12/1 winner who saw heavy support was our sole winner in the day, having gone off at 4/1 without a R4. My shortest selection was a massive drifter, Inexplicable was one out of the places leaving us with a NR which did at least see us eek out a small profit.

Today's selections are another mixed bag, Pop Dancer does have strong place claims on paper whilst the others are all capable but there is plenty enough to take on chance, we'll keep our stake level and hope as the AW continues to fill our screens, dots will begin to connect.

Attacanter's Tips

Pop Favourite 9/2 four places – 20.00 Newcastle

The 4-year-old Masterpainter is 16lbs below a neck second from February, my selection is 7lbs below a C&D from January, they'll carry effectively the same weight which if running to their best, does take away plenty of value from my selection Pop Dancer who is winless in nine.

He returned to the track in September off a five month break, after what were hopefully pipe openers he put in a semi-decent effort here three weeks ago, from a nice enough draw he was taken away from the rail, 2f out making his effort wide, he looked to be going well before his effort whimpered out settling for fourth.

Given his tame finish in that race, he was then tried over 7f which I am hoping was nothing more than a prep for today now back over the mile. Seeing a claimer take over from the stable jockey is a good sign, they've typically done well on the horse. Today is Mikkel Moertensen's turn, the yard's most valuable apprentice putting him 7lbs below his last win in January

Born Too Run 10/1 four places – 17.30 Newcastle

I have long been a fan of P J McDonald, a veteran jockey who is at his local track tonight Dunstall Park. He has a nice record with the trainer, 10 winners from 43 runners, operating at nearly 25%. Those stats aren't reason enough to chance this horse with another of theirs probably more likely in the opener, but it is the 2-year-old I'll include.

This horse has barely beat a rival in four runs, she's been tried at every trip from 6f to a mile and twice on the All-Weather surface, all ominous reading, the main reason was the fact the 2nd favourite is 6/1 and we are more than entilted to show more than we have to date. The trainer had a winner on Sunday, he sent three here at the start of the month walking away with two winners.

Mahato 4/1 – 17.03 Leicester

As is usual, there are many I like and many angles that could be used to justify a selection. There were a couple at a price which could have been chanced but my eye is most drawn to the two at the top of the market, both 4/1.

Spirit Genie has the form in the book as a 4-year-old, he's won three times this year already, including last time, he is fully proven on the going, can stay further and has more than mixed it at this level. He actually romped home in this race last year by 8.5 lengths and sits only 7lbs higher, that is a better sales pitch than most of my selections get but it is the Haggass handicap debutant that I'll risk.

Given the trainer, the bookies are taking no chance on Mahato, which does remove value from the selection because he could easily be one that the trainer brings along slowly, he has however shown enough to date for me to include him this time, if he fails to place I'll perhaps consider tightening my selection policy.

The horse beat 14 rivals on debut on relatively soft going at Windsor almost a year to the day when making his debut. I am not going to outlay who he beat and what that's done this time, he was then tried over 7f at Newcastle when a pleasing enough 4th of 12. That was the last time we saw him until a month ago at Kempton.

That was over 6f, the horse was a 7 length 2nd, back over 7f he can resume his progress despite being up against a good few experienced competitors having discounted enough to risk him.

Socialise 12/1 four places – 18.30 Newcastle

These races can be tricky to decipher and I do have a decent amount of scepticism over this selection but I try to balance things and think he is just about worth risking despite the fact this will be the first he's racing his elders. There is not really enough reason to take this punt but the place market is wide open according to the market and it is the 3-year-old I'll side with.

WHAT IS A LUCKY 15 BET?

A Lucky 15 bet consists of 15 unique bets, covering every possible combination that comes from backing four selections. The 15 bets are broken down like this:

– 1 fourfold accumulator

– 4 trebles, with each treble omitting one of your selections

– 6 doubles, again covering every possible combination

– 4 singles

The attraction of a Lucky 15 is that it offers many more ways to win than a standard accumulator. A Lucky 15 uses both your acca and your singles as well as producing trebles and doubles that reward you for correctly calling 2/4 or 3/4 of your selections. To cover the 15 separate bets, a Lucky 15 uses your stake 15 times. If you were to place £1 on a Lucky 15, you would be staking £15 in total across the various bets.
