Greece vs Republic of Ireland

, KO: 19:45 Oct 13, 2024, Karaiskakis Stadium
Republic of Ireland

Three days off the back of one of their most historic triumphs in recent times, Greece will go up against the Republic of Ireland at the Karaiskakis Stadium on Sunday night.

Ivan Jovanovic’s side pulled off arguably the biggest shock in this year’s Nations League to date with a 2-1 win over England on Thursday night.

That Wembley win means the Blues and Whites are now sitting proudly at the top of Group B2.

Seeking to tighten their stranglehold at the summit of the section, Greece will look to make it four wins from four when they host the Republic of Ireland.

The Boys in Green bagged their first win of the campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 success away at Finland on Thursday.

That victory marked Heimir Hallgrimsson's maiden victory as Ireland boss, and he will hope that win will act as a springboard for further success in Piraeus.

How the bookies view it: Go for Greece

Greece are odds-on 4/5  favourites with Betfred to make it four wins on the bounce in this year's Nations League. Jovanovic’s men will be riding the crest of a wave following their exploits in the English capital in midweek, and they look worth backing to follow that up with another victory here.

The Republic of Ireland are rank outsiders at 4/1 on BetVictor, while a share of the Karaiskakis Stadium spoils on Sunday night is an unfancied 12/5 with William Hill.

Head to head: No luck of the Irish

The Republic of Ireland have failed to get the better of Greece in each of the previous six meetings, losing on five occasions. The Greeks ran out 2-0 winners in last month’s reverse fixture in Dublin and the same scoreline on Sunday can be backed at 13/2 with Betfred.

Players to watch: Pavlidis to put on another show?

Vangelis Pavlidis etched his name into Greek folklore after netting both goals in Thursday’s 2-1 win over England. As such, the Greek goal-getter stands out at 21/10 for an anytime strike on Sunday night.

Robbie Brady was Ireland’s hero on Thursday and he is as big as 20/1 on Ladbrokes to notch for the second game running.

Predicted line-ups

Greece boss Jovanovic could keep faith with the same set of players that turned over England 2-1 on Thursday night.

Evan Ferguson got some much-needed game time on Thursday but Ireland boss Hallgrimsson could look to manage the Brighton ace’s minutes by giving Adam Idah the nod on Sunday night

Greece: Vlachodimos; Rota, Mavropanos, Koulierakis, Giannoulis; Siopis, Kourbelis; Masouras, Bakasetas, Tzolis; Pavlidis

Republic of Ireland: Kelleher; Ebosele, Collins, Scales, Brady; Azaz, Cullen, Knight; Ogbene, Idah, Szmodics

Anything else catch the eye?

Given the upward curve that Greece find themselves on at the movement, backing the home team to score two or more goals holds plenty of appeal at 6/5 on Bet 365.

Jovanovic’s side have struck twice or more in each of their opening three Nations League games, one of which was against the Republic of Ireland.

What’s more, Greece have scored at least twice in nine of their last 11 home games across all competitions, so the 6/5 (Bet 365) about a repeat here is a price that definitely represents value.
