THE best golfers in Europe will be lining up this week for the BMW at Wentworth in what is a key qualifying event for the Ryder Cup.
William Hill make Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Rory Mcllroy their joint 12-1 favourites with last week's Spanish Open winner Miguel Angel Jimenez the best backed player at 33-1.
Our golf man Ace Venturer has recovered sufficiently from illness to send some tips – and hopefully a winner will make him feel better.
He says: This week the main bets are all going on the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth where there is a stellar European field.
My first pick is Malaysian Open winner Lee Westwood who was seventh in the Masters before that. Lee seems to have got his mojo back and his Augusta performance has given him a big boost.
I expect big things from him this year. His driving accuracy is holding up in the 60s and his putting stats are his best since 2010. Although he is one of the favourites for this tournament I’m taking him as an each-way bet.
A player who is hot at the moment is Miquel Angel Jimenez. He won last week in the Spanish Open after a brilliant fourth in the Masters and in between also won in his debut tournament on the Champions Tour at the Greater Gwinnet Championships. He really looks like he’s enjoying himself just now and is well worth a shot here at Wentworth.
Chris Woods comes here from a couple of good results in the past few weeks. He finished tied seventh in Spain and before that was fifth in the Championship at Laguna National. Every time I’ve seen Woods I’ve been impressed and hopefully he can do enough to sneak into the top six.
My final pick for Wentworth is Welshman Jamie Donaldson. He’s been making people take notice on the other side of the Atlantic with a T14th Masters finish and T2nd in the WGC Cadillac in March. He also finished T2nd in the Nedbank Classic in Sun City in December and has the game to win a big tournament and hopefully this is it.
I’m going off piste for my next couple of bets. In the Senior PGA Championship the man to get your money on is Bernard Langer who has not been out of the top 10 in his eight starts this year.
He’s had two wins and three seconds in those eight starts, in fact he’s only been out of the top five twice. Unfortunately he’s going to be a low price but get on him to win and sit back and relax.
Another oldie playing well at the moment is the one and only Monty. In his seven starts this season Colin Montgomerie has finished in the top 10 six times including a second and third. It will be nice to have a wee bet on Monty again with hopefully a different outcome than in the past.
20pt staking plan
Lee Westwood 3.5pts ew 12-1 Ladbrokes, bet365
Miquel Angel Jimenez 2pts (ew) 35-1 Betfred
Chris Wood 1pt (ew) 66-1 Paddy Power, Ladbrokes
Bernard Langer 2.5pts 5-1 BetVictor, McBookie
Colin Montgomerie 2pts (ew) 16-1 BetVictor, McBookie
I cant see by the winner coming from either mcilroy or Westwood both are hitting form just at the right time both being 12/1 am gonna have 20 pound outright on both.
For me you can’t go past Francesco Molinari at the BMW PGA this week. A good recent record (T-7th in 2012, T-9th in 2013) at Wentworth and a combined PGA and European Tour current season of 12 events for 12 cuts made including 5 top 25s and 3 top 10s. He’ll be pushing hard for an automatic Ryder Cup berth (currently four spots outside the automatic qualification system in terms of the World Points List) and at odds of around 25/1 for the win, 5/1 for top 5 and 9/4 for a top 10 (all with Betfair), I think offers great value and certain to give you a run for your money for four rounds.
Hope some of you find my thoughts to be of interest!
Cheers.
I like the look of Francesco Molinari has found a bit of form and course should suit him, will be making a big push to get in Ryder Cup team
I’ve selected the MLB games I’ll be on including the early Tigers game with the ever so reliable Scherzer!
DET Tigers (Scherzer) -1.5 RL @ 21/20
MIA Marlins (Eovaldi) -1.5 RL @ 8/5
LA Dodgers (Ryu) -1.5 @ 11/10
Trebles 10.19/1 – I played the treble as a Trixie bet.
The MLB crew should come in soon and elaborate.
Placed some golf bets for the Crowne Plaza Invitational and BMW PGA Championship as well.
Top 10 Finish Double:
Jordan Spieth – Crowne Plaza Invitational
Justin Rose – BMW PGA Championship
4.95
Top 20 Finish Double:
George Coetzee – BMW PGA Championship
Harris English – Crowne Plaza Invitational
14.63
:D
Wouldn’t touch McIlroy as he has just split up with his fiancee.
BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
TOP 20 FINISH
KIRADECH APHIBARNRAT 6/1 (SKYBET) NB
EDDIE PEPPERELL 7/1 (BET365) NAP
In the BMW PGA there is a market for TOP IRISH player comprising of 11 players. The market is headed by Rory McIlroy at 8/13 and then is 8/1 the field. McIlroy has just split up with Caroline Wozniacki and watching him on Sky he looks in a terrible place right now. With Padraig Harrington quoted at 8/1 and Shane Lowry at 11/1 with all bookies going 1/5 the odds 1-2-3 there is a huge opportunity to oppose McIlroy and find value from the rest.
Top 10 Finish for BMW PGA Championship:
Lee Westwood @5/4
Luke Donald @5/4
Sergio Garcia @11/8
Thoughts on my picks anyone?
Xbuang, very good prices for Westwood and Garcia who may well win it.
Simon Khan seems to do well at Wentworth and this tournament he won it in 2010 and finished 2nd in 2006 and 2010, and can be backed at 150/1 I will probably do him to finish in the top 20 at 11/2 which seems a lot safer good luck to him I 2014
@Raal
I know Eddie pepperell and think thats a gd call, finished 6th last year. Been struggling this year, but played well last week ( except sat) and course will suit him well. He’s from frilford heath, similar set up to Wentworth..
Nudger, thanks mate, I wasn’t aware that he was from there. Like you say last years form and also his recent efforts make him a very good shout in my eyes at that price for top 20. I also like Aphibarnrat, he is a quality golfer but unfortunately has health problems that can occasionally be affected by the heat, hence a few poor shows on the Asian Tour but he will be quite happy over here.
Do you really think Mcilroys head is gonna be right after splitting with fiancee?? I dont. I see the mytical 2 ball with Powers has Westwood 10/11 to beat Mcilroy and I strongly fancy this.
mickdundee, I don’t think McIlroy will make the cut. He had these problems before with her and his game went to pieces.
Rusty – Didn’t realise there was a new thread to post the MLB chat on!
Basically I’m trying to put up a Yankee bet again, following on from yesterday’s partial success.
So far it’s:
Mariners ML @2.25
Cardinals -1.5 @2.35
Blue Jays ML @2.15
I was looking for at least one more good pick, preferably @2.15+
I thought about Ryu -1.5 at very good odds but I’m sure I read a little while back he had a strain or something. I might me making that up completely, or he could be fine now – What’s the latest on him Rusty?
Matt Kucher is a good shout for a top 10 finish, has had 8 top 10’s in his last 12 comps…Always in the mix come Sundays…Big EW bet for me.
Alasu, you can get 6/4 on Kucher for a top ten finish and given the figures you mention that could be a steal.
Cheers Raal, im gonna take a wee chance as I think this one could be his, got 14/1 EW,,,,, if he gets top 5, still a good profit with quarter odds :)
Shane Lowry @125/1 BMW
Tigers off to an early lead in Cleveland and they look fired up with the camera shots they have just shown in the dug-out!
4-0 already and Scherzer on the mound for the Tigers = GAME OVER!
Jaseos, you ever had doubt with Scherzer on the mound? The guy is extra-terrestial this season :)
The sun is in the way for the Tigers. Uh oh!
Jaseos, jinxed it much?
Well this wasn’t in the script…
Rusty, It’s a good job I don’t believe in jinxes or I’d be fuming with myself right now!! There’s plenty of time yet.
Jaseos, Scherzer doesn’t usually slip in these situations..but honestly Keuchel has better composure in these jams
I don’t know if the commentators are picking up on this because I have the sound on mute. I have noticed though that Scherzer is very regularly “falling off” the mound as he delivers. I know his action is unusual but not normally dragging away like this.
Final selection for the Yankee bet (again just 45p per leg – £4.95 total).
Mariners ML @2.35
Dodgers -1.5 @2.35
Blue Jays ML @2.15
Cardinals -1.5 @2.35
I really wouldn’t advise anyone to follow as I am just seeing if this system of betting has legs.
I can’t believe Scherzer has gone 7 innings after the start he has had – He will pick up the Win in this game if it stays like this!!
The man has shown more about his character today than I have ever seen of him. No other pitcher would have gone that deep in the game after giving up 7 runs!

Not looking that great so far!!
Had Jiminez last week at 22/1,although he made me sweat, I would have been very happy to see him win even if T did not have money on him, unless I had backed Green or Pieters.
So much for Kucher top 10………goes great in past 6 months, soon as I place money on him, misses cut lol….oh well, I got Luke Donald @Wentworth, he’s going well !!!!!!
