Switzerland vs Austria

, KO: 17:00 Jun 8, 2024, Kybunpark
Austria

Switzerland and Austria will both play their final match before Euro 2024 on Saturday evening when they meet at Kybunpark in St. Gallen.

Both nations will be looking for one final strong performance before making their way to their training camps in Germany later in the week and after impressive recent results from both, we could be in for a cracker.

Switzerland have lost just once since their World Cup exit in 2022, with Murat Yakin's men enjoying six wins and six draws in 12 of their last 13 matches.

Austria have also been impressive in the past 18 months under the guidance of Ralf Rangnick. The former Man Utd manager has led them to seven consecutive victories in a run that stretches back to October 2023.

How the bookies view it: The Swiss edge it

Despite Ausria's formidable winning streak, the bookmakers consider Switzerland the favourites for this one with home advantage seemingly the difference maker. The Swiss are priced at 13/10 with Bet365 while Austria are priced at 2/1. The draw can be had at 12/5.

Recent head-to-head: History favours Austria

Switzerland and Austria have met on 42 occasions and Austria do have the better of the overall record with 24 victories. However, in recent times, this is a fixture that has generally been good to Switzerland. They have won each of the last three meetings and Austria have recorded just one victory over them since the turn of the century.

Players to watch: Will there be more Baumgartner brilliance?

Christoph Baumgartner is on the fringes at RB Leipzig but there is a feeling in German football that the attacking midfielder has all the credentials to explode at some point. Given his Red Bull connections, it is unsurprising that Ralf Rangnick has taken a shine to him.

The 24-year-old has shown his best stuff for the national team this season and he has scored four goals and provided three assists in his last four matches for Austria. Given his ability to score and create, Switzerland will do well to keep him quiet on Saturday.

For Switzerland, Zeki Amdouni impressed off the bench against Estonia earlier in the week. The Burnley forward averages a goal every other game for his country and will be keen to show his best form this summer after an indifferent first campaign in England.

Predicted lineups

Rotation may well be the order of the day as both managers look to ensure their entire squads are ready and raring to go for Euro 2024. The aforementioned Amdouni will likely get to play from the start for Switzerland while Bayern Munich's Konrad Laimer should play the full 90 minutes for Austria after starting the previous match on the bench.

Switzerland: Mvogo – Stergiou, Zesiger, Elvedi, Akanji – Mbabu, Xhaka, Freuler – Vargas, Amdouni, Zuber

Austria: Pentz – Wober, Danso, Posch, Wimmer – Laimer, Sabitzer – Baumgartner, Prass Weimann – Gregoritsch

Anything else catch the eye?

Switzerland aren't the most entertaining team in the world with their preference to make life difficult for their opponents before anything else. Prior to their 4-0 win over Estonia, their previous five matches had all seen under 2.5 goals scored and given Austria's qualities, a similar type of game should be expected.

Therefore, under 2.5 goals at 8/11 is well worth a punt.

This match between Switzerland and Austria will be played on Jun 8, 2024 and kick off at 17:00. Check below for our tipsters best Switzerland vs Austria prediction. You may also visit our dedicated betting previews section for the most up to date previews.
