IT looks like the best way to pick a winner on the PGA Tour is to stick a pin in the field! Noh Seung-yul became the fifth player under 26 to win a tournament in the past two months and none of them were what you could call well-known faces.
However, this week the Wells Fargo Championship welcomes some notable names – McIlroy, Mickelson, Westwood, Rose, Fowler, Furyk etc to the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina. And with that in mind I’m going to go against the grain and pick some players who are among the top rated.
The course has changed a bit this year, putting surfaces altered to Bermuda grass and the last three holes (the Green Mile) have increased by an aggregate of 70 yards. Also on the 16th they have moved the the fairway 80 yards to the left to accommodate hospitality.
Rory McIlroy won his first tournament on the PGA Tour here in 2010, lost in a play-off (to Rickie Fowler) and was T10 last year so is a great pick.
So far this year he has had one bad round in nearly every tournament. In The North Western Challenge he hit a 77 and finished 11th, a 74 in the final round blew his lead in the Honda Classic and finished second, a 74 in the Shell Houston Open and a 77 in the Masters and finished T8.
He’s third in GIR (69%) and third in birdie average so we’re hoping for four solid rounds for Rory.
Lee Westwood did us a turn two weeks ago and I think he can give us a return again here. His last win on the Tour was in 2010 so it’s about time he won again in the States. His stats look quite good with GIR (65%) and driving accuracy 60% and I’m going on him each way.
Following his T14 finish in the Masters and a T2 in the WGC Cadillac Championship Jamie Donaldson is having a good year. His GIR stat is 67% and although his driving accuracy could be better (57.7%) I really rate the Welshman. Don’t be surprised if he wins his first tournament this year sometime soon – who knows maybe this weekend.
I’m backing Rickie Fowler again even after he missed the cut last week. His top-10 finishes in the Shell Open and T5 in the Masters prove the guy’s back. His GIR stat is 65% and driving accuracy is over 60% and if he gets on a streak who knows. He is definitely a confidence player and once he gets going he’ll be hard to catch.
Over in Singapore in the Championship at Laguna National one player who has caught my eye is Tommy Fleetwood. He was runner-up in the China Open last week and won the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles last year so isn’t put off by being at the top of the leaderboard. His GIR stat is nearly 72% and driving accuracy 68% so barring no blow up I expect him to be up there at the finish.
