Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

, KO: 15:00 May 11, 2024, St James' Park
Brighton & Hove Albion

NEWCASTLE UNITED will be looking to tighten their hold on sixth place in the Premier League by defeating Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Eddie Howe’s side are finishing the season strongly, having triumphed in five of their last seven top-flight tussles.

The most recent of those successes was a 4-1 romp to victory at Burnley last Saturday, in a game that brought up one of my Turf Moor tips.

Consequently, the Magpies are currently occupying sixth place, two points in front of seventh-placed Chelsea, and five points behind Spurs in fifth.

As for Brighton, they put the brakes on their six-game winless run by earning a hard-fought 1-0 win against Aston Villa last Sunday.

That morale-boosting victory has moved the Seagulls up to eleventh spot in the standings, and within touching distance of the top-half finish that they will now be targeting.

How the bookies view it: Toon Army to topple Albion

Newcastle United are lowly 11/20 favourites on Bet 365 to make it four wins from their last five outings at St James’ Park.

Brighton, whose only win away from the Amex in the Premier League this calendar year came against Sheffield United, are big outsiders at 15/4 with Bet 365.

A share of the St James’ Park spoils has been priced up at 4/1 on Bet 365.

Recent head to head: St James’ not a happy hunting ground for Seagulls

Newcastle have taken top honours from each of their last two Premier League home games with Brighton, posting a pair of 2-1 and 4-1 wins respectively.

That being said, Roberto De Zerbi’s side ran out 3-1 winners when the two teams squared off on the south coast back in September.

Players to watch: Isak in irresistible form

I successfully backed Newcastle's Alexander Isak to notch against Burnley last weekend and supporting the same selection on Saturday looks worthy of consideration at 5/6 on Bet 365. The Swedish sharpshooter has struck in each of his last seven outings at St James’ Park, racking up a combined total of 10 goals across that stretch of games.

Brighton’s Joao Pedro ended a five-match goal drought in the Premier League when netting the winner against Aston Villa last weekend. The Brazilian forward is a lofty 11/5 (Bet 365) to make the net bulge against the Magpies.

Probable line-ups

Given how crowded the Newcastle treatment room is at the moment, Eddie Howe is expected to redeploy the same starting XI that brushed aside Burnley.

Roberto De Zerbi could choose to name an unchanged starting line-up following last Sunday’s 1-0 success against Aston Villa.

Newcastle: Dubravka; Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Hall; Murphy, Longstaff, Guimaraes, Gordon; Isak,Wilson

Brighton: Verbruggen; Veltman, Webster, Dunk, Igor; Gilmour, Gross; Adingra, Buonanotte, Pedro; Welbeck

Anything else catch the eye? Newcastle to cover handicap?

With Newcastle unbackable at the above-mentioned price, siding with the hosts to clear a -1 hurdle on the Asian Handicap holds appeal at 10/11 on Bet 365.

This selection means if the Magpies prevail by two or more goals we will be paid out, if they win by a solitary strike then stakes are returned.

This selection would have proven profitable in eight of Newcastle’s 12 Premier League home wins this season, including four of their last five.

It’s also worth pointing out that this bet would have banked in four of Brighton’s last five top-flight losses, and that only adds to the appeal of supporting the same wager this weekend.
