Racing tips: The in form James Owen stable can keep rolling with Our Pink Lady

It was a nice day of racing on Sunday, not the quality but that both selections won. Whether or not Thor De Cerisy would've won if all horses stayed on their feet, who knows? I didn't get to see if the jockeys are horses were okay, so hopefully, they are. 

Loup De Maulde put in a good round of jumping, barring one mistake on the first circuit, and proved a class above that field, but he'll find it much harder next time as his rating will be matching his hurdles mark.

Southwell 4:00 – Our Pink Lady 9/4 (1pt, Bet365)

The Curragh has their first meeting of the new flat season on Monday, but I wouldn't like to get involved in that racing on heavy ground and with horses making their first runs of the season, so I'm off to Southwell for my bet.

This four-runner field is a decent event with a case to be made for every runner who lines up, but I'm going for Our Pink Lady who arrives on the back of a C&D win 14 days ago.

James Owen has made great inroads as a trainer this year, he is new to the ranks and hasn't disappointed with the horses he has under his wing. His strike rate shows that he knows what time of day it is and he has had 5 winners in the last fortnight, including my selection for this race. Our Pink Lady beat Young At Heart last time out and the latter will have a swing in the weights but I don't think it will be anywhere near enough to see a reverse in that form. Our Pink Lady has only gone up 5lbs for the course and distance win and I think that seems quite fair as she did win eased down in the end, and I think there could easily be a fair bit of improvement to come from this 6yo Westerner mare. That was her first run in just over 70 days, so she might be able to come on for that run, but I think they fancied their chances on the last day as Cobden was booked and they decided to ride her closer to the pace whereas she has been held up or in the midfield on her other starts since moving over to James' yard. Cobden is still riding out of his skin and is on board again, and considering we know she handles the conditions and likes the track, she has to be the pick against the 4yo.

I'm not fully convinced that backing 4yo's in races like this automatically means they will win. They can often win races against their own age group but when they step out of that they tend to struggle, even with the weight for age allowance they get. The form doesn't look anything out of this world and she is carrying a 7lb penalty and also has to prove she can win over today's trip on soft ground. She is far too short in the market, and I'm happy to take her on.
