IT wasn’t a bad week with two top-five finishes (Graham DeLaet and Thorbjorn Olesen). My top tip was Rory McIlroy and he looked on course for victory until being hit by food poisoning.
This week it's the AT&T at Peeble Beach with Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker among the starters.
My first pick is Dustin Johnson. Although this is his first start since the beginning of January he has had two wins and two top-10 finishes out of six appearances at this tournament.
He also finished eighth in the 2010 US Open here so seems to like the course. This season he has won the WGC HSBC Championship and finished sixth in his other start earning around $1.5million in the process.
Hunter Mahan looked good in the last two rounds last week at Scottsdale finishing fourth. He finished second here in 2011. I like Mahan, he’s a gutsy player capable of digging deep to ground out a win and he could do that this week.
For those who believe in fate, last year Mahan finished 16th at Scottsdale and then did the same at Peeble Beach. This year he was fourth at Scottsdale! So if he doesn’t win could be a top five. I’m only throwing it out there.
Another player in form is Jason Day. He finished tied second two weeks ago at Torrey Pines with some steady golf. You don’t hear much of the Aussie for ages and then he appears near the top of the leaderboard in a Major.
With three top-10 finishes in the Majors last year he’s certainly due a first PGA Tour win and this could be the one.
Chris Kirk had an awful Pheonix Open but hopefully he can get back to the form he showed earlier in the season when he won the McGladrey Classic and was second in the Sony Open in Hawaii. Well worth an each-way bet.
In South Africa at the Joburg Open the only certainty is a South African will win it, with five out of the seven previous tournaments being won by a home hero.
So with that in mind Charl Schwartzel looks a great bet. He has played four times on home soil this season with three top-10 finishes. He has also won this tournament twice before so a solid bet.
Thomas Aitken is another I like the look of. This year he’s had two top-10sand a top-20finish so worth an each-way. His stroke average and greens in regulation are the best they’ve been in the last seven years so if he can get his putter going he could get there.
20pt staking plan
Dustin Johnson 3pts ew (12-1, general)
Hunter Mahan 1.5pt ew (18-1, 888sport)
Jason Day 1.5 pts ew (11-1, Betfred, Ladbrokes)
Chris Kirk 1pt ew (33-1, Ladbrokes)
Charl Schwartzel 3pt win (4-1 BetVictor, Betfred)
Thomas Aitken 1.5 pts ew (22-1, Paddy Power, Betfred)
Ace Venturer
Two 2nds last week at big prices…In SA this week expect grillo and saddier to perform well…at&t lokk no further than perez and knox to be there or abouts..thomas for top 10 in at&t too..
Dawie Van Der Walt 65/1
I think has a great chance this week won the rain shortened Nelson Mandela tournament in December and started the season with a T9 in Qatar and a T29 came close here in 2012 (T3) Two wins on the European /Sunshine Tour in the calender year 2013 – won the Sunshine Tour Order Of Merit.
George Coetzee (11/1) win only
a quality player who should do very well He is a home favourite who has often played well in South Africa. If Schwartzel doesn’t walk away with it, then Coetzee will be challenging come the weekend.
Thomas Aiken (25/)
Has effortless swing and tee to green abilities. He has a solid record here, with a T6 last year and T3 in 2011, Finishing Qatar a couple of weeks ago T5,– 17th driving accuracy, 61st driving distance and 5th GIR. on home soil and the currently wet and soft conditions of this week’s venue should benefit the big hitter.
Magnus A Carlsson (80/1)
Magnus Carlsson recording a 2nd place in 2008, finished T17 in 2012 3rd for GIR and relatively long hitting T9 2 weeks ago will certainly give him confidence
Roope Kakko (150/1)
He had a superb year in 2013 on the Challenge Tour, played in 3 European Tour events, finishing T24, MC and T23
Van Der Walt – Drikus
Real speculative play this week comes in to the event off the back of a 2nd place in the 2014 Sunshine Tour Qualifying school last week Monday qualified for the Joburg Open with a round of -6 on the west course(tied 1st). He does have a handful of top tens on the Big Easy Tour, including one at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington last year. Drikus also finished 13th in the BMG Classic at the back end of last year, but most notably, he shot a course record 62 at Simola GC in the Vodacom Origins back in 2012 take 20/1a top 20 and 40s top 10 in the hope he continues
Graham Van Der Merwe (1000/1
A cheeky outsider for you all to consider. Graham Van Der Merwe is certainly not one of the week he is a local lad who will be excited to get out and compete on his home course. T19 last year and a 4th in another tournament held on the same course.
also I will be backing david horsey paul waring and adulson da sliva away so struggling to put things on
Hi
golf tips AT and T I still want to look at the JOBURG
AT and T I ADVISE small stakes due to PRO AM and this is a tricky one to call
At and T
Hunter Mahan (20/1 )
Ball-striker’is He!!! H. Mahan yet to win a major.
last week at the Phoenix Open, he finished T4 and 2 shots off Stadler he has a average of 8th for total driving, 25th GIR% and 27th strokes gained-putting. And let’s not forget he has two top 10’s at the US Open! An outright bet would be advised.
Jordan Spieth (25/1)
The rookie of 2013 and he had to play the majority of the courses blind and yet somehow managed to finish 10th in the money list and climb to 22nd in the world. he Finsihed 2nd place at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions T19 at the Farmers Insurance Open
Graeme McDowell (40/1 )
With a US Open victory at Pebble Beach under his belt, And his partner in the pro-am is none other than his dad. Last year saw McDowell claim the RBC Heritage and French Open, both on tracks where accuracy and methodical play was vital.
Aaron Baddeley (110/1)
has won 3 times on the tour. Pebble Beach is somewhere that has brought the best out of him over the past 3 years with finishes of 4th, 6th and 12th. 4th in strokes gained-putting which will massive on the tough surfaces this week. He’s also 10th in sand saves.
Brandt Snedeker. 33/1
A great 2nd round in Phoenix last week is all he’s shown in 2014
For the defending champ in this field 33/1 is generous. has won on tour in each of the last three seasons and he should add to that tally if staying injury free. there was a ray of hope in the second round at Scottsdale, when he shot a flawless 64. The consistency isn’t quite there yet but that means we get a generous price
Rickie Barnes (250/1)
18s top ten. and has been putting together some nice numbers this season but just unable to patch four of them together. I watched Barnes chase down Mickelson here in 2012 and it looked like he would go on to win but let me down after a stretch of 5 birdies in 7 holes on Sunday.
Bryce Molder 90/1
for him to win on tour are limited because he lacks length off the tee. The three courses used for this tournament all measure less than 7,000 yards so should be in his reach
In his last five visits he’s finished MC-T10-T6-T69-T12 he is overpriced at 90/1
and my lets give it a go
Doug LaBelle II 1000/1
The 39-year-old has two top-30 finishes in three visits and broke par in three of his four rounds last year. If it wasn’t for a second round 75 he would have threatened the leaders. His current form is non-existent but worth a punt
Top 20 finish in Joburg ,Nel,Easton and drikus vd walt…at big prices..LET tour in OZ..Girls to look out for are pace suwannapura allen and MH Lee who won at 100/1 in Christchurch NZ last week by hitting a course record -9 last rnd ..
Started following your thread over last 2 weeks and in profit. Cheers
Paul,
That was some tipping last week, will be taking some of your tips this week with some of my own, good luck
with your bets, and everyone else having a bet on the golf.
Hi guys,
Joburg Open:
@18-1, Richard Sterne looks a good bet.
Being the defending champ, previous winner and playing most of his amateur golf on these courses, he’s my punt this week.
Even 2-1 for a top 10 seems very generous.
AT&T:
Dustin Johnson @12-1.
Previous winner, plays solid golf at Pebbel Beach.
11/10 for a top 10 showing.
Good luck all.
Another placing last week with Olesen in AD and Steele was 6th in Phoenix which was annoying.
Onto this week
Joburg – Dawie Van Der Walt, Scott Jamieson, Michael Hollick and Garth Mulroy.
Pebble Beach – John Mallinger, Kevin Stadler, Cameron Tringale and Pat Perez

Sparky……this is the Golf thread mate :)
Unbelievable the lineswman is only the numptie who failed to see Griffiths free kick was over the line in the derby last season! I’ll go to my grave seeing his mug cost thousands!
1 nil Livingston
30 secs after restart
I’m going for two players how have decent form in these tournaments but to be fair haven’t been at their best lately
AT&T
Aaron Baddeley 80/1
Joburg
David Drysdale 80/1
Hunter Mahan is in good form, finished 4th last week and at 16/1 he is my tip to win, if you looking for an ew bet look no further than Jimmy Walker at 25/1 who is solid pickl here and finished in top 10 for last 3 years so is sure to give a good run for your money, good luck guys I always find Golf the toughest sport to pick a winner but doesnt stop me trying :)
bryce molder and paul waring 4000/1 ew double
one day I will get this
lol
sorry about the posts being scrappy but have been away on sales conference
paul
hi my reasons now back of sales conference for horsey waring and da silva
After a strong start to life on the European Tour, David Horsey suffered an alarming dip in 2012, finishing 129th in the Race To A straight hitter and an excellent putter, Horsey is suited to most types of courses but having played the Joburg Open four times
paul waring
The 29-year-old showed good form in Dubai last week, finishing T11 This will be his fifth visit to the Joburg Open traditionally played well here with finishes of T9-MC-T27-T16.
da silva
Adilson Da Silva was 16th on last year’s Order of Merit despite a limited playing schedule. In ten starts he finished T25-T12-T41-1-T16-T2-1-T2-T13-T28.
Jimmy walker winning, hunter mahan 7th I know its early days but I could be in for a good day come Sunday…..prob just jinxed it now :)
