Rangers vs St Mirren

, KO: 15:00 Apr 15, 2023, Ibrox
St Mirren

RANGERS' title hopes vanished last week with that controversial defeat at Celtic and they are now effectively playing friendlies until the next Old Firm encounter at the end of this month in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Even by Old Firm standards, it's been quite a week and the repercussions have been felt far and wide, but the bottom line is Rangers are now 12 – realistically 13 with the goal difference – points behind a Celtic side who have been relentless.

While games may not mean too much for Rangers until that Hampden showdown, it certainly does for high-flying St Mirren who are on the brink of a first-ever top-six appearance since reconstruction.

In fact, the Buddies are only one point behind Hearts and look certainties too to also claim a European spot for the first time since 1987.

Last week they went to Tynecastle and deservedly won. They are also the only side in the league to have defeated Celtic and they have also drawn with Rangers.

Stephen Robinson has assembled a decent squad with muscular striker Curtis Main arguably the most-improved player in the Premiership this season.

How the bookies view it

Rangers are enormous favourites as usual and are around the 1/5 mark although UniBet has them at 2/9.

St Mirren can be backed at 16/1 with Coral and 11/2 with McBookie.com is the price for a draw.

Recent head to heads

St Mirren's 1-1 draw with Rangers in November was the last time Rangers dropped points to anyone in the league apart from Celtic.

Rangers won 4-0 at Ibrox in October though and haven't lost to the Saints in Govan since 1992.

They have also won the last nine meetings at Ibrox to nil!

Players to watch

James Tavernier grabbed his 100th goal for Rangers in a double last week which ultimately counted for little. He is 15/8 to score anytime with Paddy Power.

Curtis Main has been a huge pest for defenders this season and he's chipped in with plenty of goals too. He is 13/2 to score with William Hill.

Anything else catch the eye?

With St Mirren battling it out for what would be their first third place finish since 1980 and Rangers having little to play for, it's worth taking a chance on the usual enormous chasm between the Old Firm and the rest reducing here for once by backing the Paisley side on the handicaps.

Back the Buddies with a two-goal start on Rangers at 5/4 with BetVictor. Rangers have only scored three goals or more once in their last five home league matches.

Although St Mirren have an atrocious record at Ibrox and as stated, haven't even scored since 2015, if they are ever going to lay a glove on Rangers, the time should be now. Although Michael Beale's side should have too much for them, back Rangers to win and both teams to score at 11/5 with bet365.
