Monaco are aiming to carry on their form from the first half of the season as they travel to Auxerre for a midweek Ligue 1 fixture. They have a good record on their travels and should be too strong for the hosts who have found things difficult this season.
The task for Auxerre as the second half of Ligue 1 resumes is to avoid the drop. Christophe Pelissier's men are currently in the relegation zone, although all hope is not lost as they are just three points behind Troyes in 13th place.
The problem for Auxerre is that they showed very little survival instincts in the first half of the season. They head into Wednesday’s clash with just one win from their last 11 Ligue 1 matches and were beaten 5-0 by PSG in their previous fixture.
Things are slightly better at home for Auxerre, who are unbeaten in their last three matches in front of their fans. However, they were held three times in that run while their only victory in the last five matches at the Stade de l’Abbe Deschamps was a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Ajaccio.
Monaco made a poor start to the season, claiming just one win from their opening five matches. However, they ultimately picked up their form and are now up to sixth on the standings, just one point off the European places.
Philippe Clement’s men went into the international break off the back of a 3-2 defeat to Marseille, which ended a run of two straight wins. They will be disappointed to have dropped the points as they came from behind to lead through Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland before conceding two late goals.
The good news for Monaco is that they have surprisingly done their best work on their travels having lost just once away from home this season. They have won four of their last five matches on the road, keeping clean sheets in all four wins.
How the bookies view it
Monaco are considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies with a win priced at 4/5 by SBK. Auxerre are outsiders at home at 7/2 by bet365 while Paddy Power is offering odds of 13/5 for a draw.
Recent head to head
Monaco are unbeaten in the last six matches against Auxerre, claiming four wins in that run. They have conceded just one goal in that run and did the double over their rivals last season with both matches ending 2-0.
Players to watch
Monaco have plenty of attacking threats but Wissam Ben Yedder often leads the line and could be worth keeping an eye on. The striker has six goals this season and could be backed to once again get on the score sheet at 6/4 with bet365.
Monaco are just as solid defensively with centre-backs Benoit Badiashille and Guillermo Maripan leading them to four clean sheets in their last five away matches. The visitors have also kept clean sheets in five of the last six meetings with Auxerre and could be set for a repeat at 7/4 with BoyleSports.
Anything else catch the eye?
Given Monaco’s solid defence on the road and with Auxerre struggling for goals in this fixture, BTTS NO could be considered at 6/5 with BetVictor. Monaco have won to nil in four of their last five away matches and a repeat could be on the cards at 23/10 with BetVictor.
While Monaco have been solid at the back, they also have enough attacking quality for a -1 handicap to be considered at 21/10 by Betfred.
