Wednesday’s Football Bet of the Day see’s me focus on the Champions League and there’s a match I’m expecting plenty of goals between two sides top of their domestic league’s.
RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich
🇪🇺 Champions League
⏰ Wednesday 16th February, 20:00
After cruising through their group with a 100% record, Bayern return to Champions League action, as they travel to Red Bull Arena to take on RB Salzburg. The Austrians reached the knockout-stages by finishing second in their group behind French champions Lille.
As already mentioned, RB Salzburg finished second in Group D to qualify for the knockouts stages of the Champions League for the very first time. The Austrians collected 10 points from their six group matches and won all three at their Red Bull Arena, scoring on six occasions. The Red Bulls finally returned to domestic action last Friday following the winter break and won 1-2 away to Rapid Wien. Matthias Jaissle’s side are currently 14 points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga and are on course to make it nine league titles in a row. The reigning Austrian champions have found the back of the net 44 times already in the league, with 27 of those coming on home turf.
Bayern Munich cruised through Group E by winning all six of their group matches, scoring a whopping 22 goals in the process. However, they were surprising thumped 4-2 by promoted Bochum at the weekend, meaning their lead at the top of the German Bundesliga was subsequently reduced to just six points. It comes as no surprise that Bayern Munich are the highest scorers in Germany, with FC Hollywood finding the back of the net on 70 occasions in just 22 matches. Bayern have only managed to keep seven clean sheets in the Bundesliga, with just two of them coming on their travels.
Bet of the Day
Red Bull Salzburg have made the knockout stages of the Champions League for the very first time, but could hardly have been given a harder draw, coming up against near-neighbours Bayern Munich. The reigning German champions won all six of their group-stage games, scoring 22 goals in the process, but the Austrians did win all three of their group matches on home turf. The Red Bulls have already scored 35 goals in their 13 League and European matches at Red Bull Arena this season, and with Bayern conceding in 9/11 of their Bundesliga matches away from home, I can see the Austrians getting on the scoresheet at least once here. However, Bayern and Robert Lewandowski simply score goals for fun, with Julian Nagelsmann’s side already scoring 92 goals in their 28 league and Champions League matches this season. There was 12 goals scored when these two met in last year’s Champions League, with both matches breaking the over 3.5 goal-barrier and that’s the play I’m backing here.
