Sevilla vs RB Salzburg

, KO: 17:45 Sep 14, 2021, Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan
RB Salzburg

Sevilla and RB Salzburg begin their campaign in the UEFA Champions League with a clash at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Group G is considered an open one with both teams looking to claim the early initiative.

Sevilla progressed automatically for the group stage of the Champions League and did not have to go through the qualifiers. They have made a fine start to the Spanish La Liga this season with two wins and a draw from their opening three matches.

The Spaniards progressed from their group in last year’s Champions League, reaching the round of 16 where they lost to Dortmund. Julen Lopetegui's men will be looking to once again reach the knockout stage of the competition and with Group G considered one of the most open, they will fancy their chances of making it.

Home form will be key for Sevilla and a win on their own turf in the opening fixture is likely to give them confidence for the rest of the tournament. They have however struggled defensively against Europe’s elite and are likely to be troubled by Salzburg’s exciting attack.

RB Salzburg have totally dominanted club football in Austria but are yet to make a real impact on the continent. They have qualified for the group stage of the Champions League in the last two season but have failed to make it to the knockout round.

Salzburg have a poor record in the group stage of the Champions League and claimed just one win last season. They also struggle on the road and have lost their last two away matches in the group stage.

Matthias Jaissle’s men are once again dominating in Austria and came through the qualifiers comfortably, overcoming Danish side Brondby 4-2 on aggregate in the playoffs.

How the bookies view it

The bookies have Sevilla as favourites with a home win priced at 7/10 with betway. A victory for RB Salzburg is valued at 4/1 by Skybet while a draw is set at odds of 16/5 by SBK.

Salzburg often struggle to make the step up to Europe’s elite and I am leaning towards a victory for Sevilla.

Head to head

Both teams met twice during the 2008 Europa League with Sevilla winning both matches.

Players to watch

Yourself En-Nesyri was the top scorer for Sevilla last season and with two goals already this term, could be tipped to score anytime at 10/11 with Unibet. Erik Lamela has also made a fast start to life in Sevilla with three goals and could be worth a punt in the same market at 15/8 with SBK.

Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi has six goals in the Austrian Bundesliga and was also on target in the playoffs against Brondby. The German could be worth a punt to score anytime at 29/10 with Unibet.

Anything else catch the eye?

Sevilla’s last four matches in the Champions League have produced over 3.5 goals and a repeat is priced at 14/9 with SBK. There have been more goals after the break in Sevilla’s last six home matches so the second half could be tipped as the highest scoring half at evens with Paddy Power.

Both teams could also be tipped to score in the second half at 2/1 with bet365.
