Fresh from their Champions League triumph in Spain, Dortmund turn their attention to the Revierderby as they travel to the VELTINS-Arena for a clash against Schalke. They are keen to get their Bundesliga campaign back on track and will fancy their chances against the bottom side.
Dortmund's Bundesliga campaign has not gone according to plan as they sit sixth on the table, well behind leaders and bitter rivals Bayern Munich. They are in danger of missing out on a European finish this season and will need a quick turn around of fortunes to stand a chance.
Edin Terzic's men have been terribly inconsistent this season and head into Saturday’ clash with just one win in their last six Bundesliga matches. Terzic will be replaced by Marco Rose in the summer and will be keen to leave the club in a better position for his successor.
Dortmund will take some confidence from their Champions League performance at Sevilla as Erling Haaland's brace earned them a 3-2 win. However, their defence remains a constant source of worry having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine matches across all competitions.
To say that Schalke have been thoroughly disappointing this season would be grossly understating the fact. They have spent much of the season at the bottom of the table and are nine points from safety.
Schalke's problems have seen them claim just one win from 21 Bundesliga matches this season. Christian Gross' men have also struggled at home with six defeats in their last seven matches at the VELTINS-Arena.
How the bookies view it
The bookies have installed Dortmund as favourites on Saturday with the visitors priced at 37/100 with novibet to win. Schalke are outsiders at 9/1 with betfair while Skybet is offering 19/4 for a draw.
Given Schalke’s poor form, Dortmund should be too strong here and I am backing them to secure the win on Saturday.
Head to head
Dortmund have a slight edge in this fixture having claimed 35 wins from 98 previous matches. Schalke have 33 wins while 30 matches have ended in stalemates.
Terzic’s men have the upper hand in recent encounters having won the last two meetings. They claimed a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture at the Signal Iduna Park.
Players to watch
Erling Haaland remains the standout player for Dortmund and often carries much of the team’s attacking threat. Following his brace against Sevilla on Wednesday, Sporting Index is backing the striker at 12/25 to score anytime.
Schalke often struggle in attack but striker Mark Uth could also be worth a punt in the anytime goalscorer market at 7/2 with Unibet.
Anything else catch the eye?
Haaland has a habit of scoring multiple goals and has scored a brace in his last two away matches. William Hill is offering 19/10 for the Norwegian striker to net two or more goals here. He is also priced at 41/20 with Unibet to score the first goal.
There could also be some value in the goals market with Dortmund seeing over 3.5 goals in three of their last four matches. A similar outcome is priced at 6/5 with novibet.
