IT was a case of what might have been last night but still a profitable evening.

The both teams to score line frustrated me with three out of three winning and the other two being postponed. I had high hopes for the fivefold but it was sod's law that the two matches off were on my one line.

Anyway a treble's a treble and the returns are being reinvested tonight.

Bradford's failure to beat Burton in 90 minutes beat the homes but there was a small profit for anyone who permed them.

Tonight there are fewer games to look at and we have the same problem with working out line-ups in the Capital One Cup.

We know the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Man Utd, Norwich and Liverpool will field weakened teams – but will their reserves be good enough for the opposition?

Arsenal's youngsters are always quality so should be strong enough at home to Coventry but best odds are 2-9 at William Hill. Likewise Spurs, 8-15 at William Hill, are expected to win at Carlisle.

Maybe the toughest games to call are the all-Premier League ones. Man Utd will put out a shadow side, but likely to feature Darren Fletcher, at home to Newcastle so the visitors will be the value here at 6-1 (various) if they field a powerful line-up.

Liverpool, who lost 3-0 at West Brom on the opening day of the Premier League season, return to the Hawthorns with a much younger team. But it's the players who stunned Young Boys 5-3 in Switzerland who will take to the field.

The third top-flight tie sees QPR welcome Reading and I won't betting on any of these games until I see the starting line-ups.

If there's going to be a shock it could be at Norwich where a weakened Premier League side tackle Doncaster who must be worth a small wager at 11-2 with Ladbrokes. On the double chance League One Donny are 6-4 at Coral.

In Scotland SPL leaders Motherwell are all the age as they visit Third Division Rangers. The young Ibrox side look off the pace in comparison to Scotland's leading contenders and Well should be backed at a best 21-10 with William Hill, although that price will fall.

Michael Higdon has been inspired this season and the Well hotshot can be backed at 11-2 with Skybet and William Hill to score first and 13-8 at 888sport to net at any time.

William Hill make Higdon 4-1 to net in a Well win while Lee McCulloch, who has scored in every match at Ibrox this season, is 6-4 to hit the target.

It's a busy night in Europe with top-flight games in Germany, Italy and Spain. Hannover at home to Nuremberg look best bets in the Bundesliga while Stuttgart should edge out Hoffenheim.

In Serie A I'm taking AC Milan to end a dismal run by beating Cagliari at home – it's a side they've taken three points off on eight successive occasions at the San Siro and they have Robinho back to give them a boost.

Inter cam maintain their 100 per cent away record at Chievo and Roma can take care of Sampdoria at home having been spared playing at Cagliari last weekend and handed a 3-0 win by league bosses.

In Spain I'll be taking Atletico Madrid at Real Betis but only if top scorer Falcao is passed fit. The French League Cup is best avoided but there has been money on big-spending Monaco, bossed by Claudio Ranieri, at 7-5 with Paddy Power to beat top-flight Valenciennes at home.

My both teams to score fivefold is listed below and I particularly like Man Utd v Newcastle, Moenchengladbach v Hamburg and Roma v Sampdoria if you want to stick to a treble.

I’ve lost a fair whack on Italian teams over the last couple of weeks, with Juve being the most recent coupon buster last night. With the amount of corruption, that’s it finished with Italian teams on the coupon for me.

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Gary, I don’t think it’s all bad. Juve drawing away to Fiorentina an’t be described as corrupt. It was probably 40 per cent home chance, 40 per cent draw chance. They are unbeaten this season and last but have drawn quite a few of those.

Yeah, fair comment Mr F. Not specifically saying that match was fixed lol but Milan messing up at home to Anderlecht and Roma throwing away a 2-0 lead at home to Bologna hasn’t done me any favours recently!

Not alot I like the look of tonight so taking a few teams to score a couple of goals.

Liverpool, Werder Bremen & Rangers all to score 2+ goals @ 9/1

Couldn’t be backing AC Milan at such short odds on that pitch. AC milan have lost both home games and Inter have lost both home games.

Neither have got used to the new pitch at all and hate playing on it.

AC milan havent even scored on the new pitch in 3 attempts (2 league and 1 CL)

£5 on the rest, permed of course, I’m still up from last week and this Monday and Tuesday.
And a bonkers bet on Carlisle, Coventry and West Brom treble to win, for a laugh. My last 30p in my Hills online account – gets £75.
Definitely gonna be a couple of upsets in the capital cup I reckon.

I can understand why most punters fancy them but I’m not one of them.

I just cannot see Motherwell winning at Ibrox. I’ve just got a feeling that Rangers will rise to the occasion and get a draw at best.

BTTS 5 times let down by 1 team, hopefully luck will change tonight as i’m waiting on West Brom v Liverpool for my midweek acca. Homes down already with Bradford drawing last night. In Dumfries with the misses for a day out on monday and she popped into Ladbrokes to do the irish lottery. Whilst waiting for her i did the What will happen coupons for last night and tonight. Last nights came in, saying that i wouldn’t advise this bet as it is a lottery in itself. A few pints were on board when doing this bet. @Ellis HERE’S A COPY OF THE EMAIL PAUL SENT ME WAY BACK YEAR EXPLAINING PERMS. EASY TO UNDERSTAND……….
“Tony, a perm basically gives you the chance to get one or more selections wrong and still get a return but it doesn’t really work on short prices.
For example, my away tips last Saturday were Southampton, Wolves, Port Vale and Forfar. I advised perming three from four and any four.
This equals five bets, one fourfold and four trebles. Forfar was a wrong selection so I was left with one treble paying 25-1.
For a unit stake of £10 (total outlay £50) my return was £260 for one wrong.
But you can do things such as 4, 5 and all 6 (22 bets), a lucky 15 which is good for first scorers or correct scores or 3,4 and all 5 (16 bets) which I like for draws.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers, Paul”

I know most people on here prefer their football, and I’m definitely one of those. but with Ryder cup starting in 2 days, any opinions on it would be much appreciated. I personally think Europe are overpriced at 6/4. although I know playing in America could cause a bit of a problem and swing it in the Americans favour. I want to go big on Europe, to give myself 3days worth of entertainment, but I’d like to hear other peoples opinions/advice first.

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit

Luke, if I have time I’ll do a piece. I’m thinking Europe but it could come down to a couple of putts here or there as both teams are strong. Paddy Power have an offer on just now and if you sign up you can get 4-1 Europe. If I was you I’d buy Thursday’s Racing Post which has Ryder Cup betting pull-out.

Luke, I’ve had a look at the Post and it doesn’t surprise me to see a difference of opinion on their pages, some going for Europe and some going for USA. One guy even says “it’s better event to watch than to punt on” and I know what he means. Either side is capable of winning and that’s the problem. If you’re simply trying to recover bad losses this isn’t the way to do it.

I think USA will win the Ryder Cup this year, quite confident on that as much as I would love 2 see Europe win. However,i’d b looking 2 back Europe in any games involving McDowell and Lawrie,2 extremely determined scrappers. Think u’ll get good odds on any game involving Lawrie because he’s probably the least glamorous player taking part,he did really well the last time he played a Ryder Cup in America tho. Also,Sergio Garcia is always worth backing in anything other than the singles

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Jonathan, once the pairings are revealed there should be good opportunities. The guys who should pick up points for Europe are McIlroy, McDowell, Westwood, Donald, Poulter and Garcia. Lawrie’s putting slightly worries me because it’s a course where most putts holed wins and that’s not been the strongest part of his game.

thanks Jonathan, sort of input I’m looking for, although I’d have preferred if you fancied Europe.

Following on from my last post……just checked Paddy Power and Paul Lawrie is 13/8 to win 2 or more points. I think this is very tempting. Wot u think Paul?

Jonathan, I’m not sure about Lawrie as I said. Also depends on how many games he’ll play. Could be left out once on each day so that leaves three matches to get two points from.

No bother Luke. Europe could well do it mate,Paul knows his golf and he’s backing Europe so it could go either way. My money’s on USA tho and as I say I feel Lawrie will b a big player this week. Saw an interview with him yesterday and he looked well up for it

Jonathan, it’s a tough call really. But I was asked the question and I’m going with Europe. All I’m sure about is that it will be close. Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy are the players being backed for biggest team points scorers.

that price for Lawrie to pick up 2 or more points seems fairly generous. not sure whether I’ll be getting stuck into individual markets or not though. I wouldn’t usually bet on the Ryder cup, as I get well into it anyways. just looking to recoup losses really, but chasing losses tends to only end in one way! may be better off looking at a decent value double or treble at the weekend. a Newcastle Sunderland double looks tempting at first glance.

thanks Paul. having read quite a few reviews and predictions now, everyone is struggling to split the 2 sides, with most tipped score being 14.5 – 13.5 in either teams favour. think I’ll put some money on Europe but nowhere near as much as first considered. thanks for your opinions guys.

Luke, think of it as a football derby. It will be fiercely fought and one or two little things could swing it either way.

very good comparison Paul. will possibly have small wager on Europe, with price drifting all the time. then probably try my luck in a few match bets
