ALL eyes will be on Wimbledon's Centre Court this afternoon as Andy Murray tries to end the 76-year wait for a British winner.

The Scot has reached the final in impressive style but standing in his way of making history is grass act Roger Federer, six times a champiosn at SW19.

We'd all love to see Murray triumph but bookies don’t deal in sentiment and they’re confident Federer will equal Pete Sampras’ record of seven titles. He is a biggest 8-15 with bet365 while Murray is the 7-4 underdog at Stan James.

I reckon Murray, who has an 8-7 winning record against the Swiss, is good enough to get the job done but could be meeting the wrong man at the wrong time.

Federer was immense against world No.1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals and if plays like that again he'll be tough to beat.

And the statistics are against the British No.1 who has lost two Grand Slam finals to Federer in straight sets – in fact in three previous finals he's yet to win a set.

However, fourth seed Murray looks to have improved under the guidance of coach Ivan Lendl, especially on the mental side, and there are some who believe the 25-year-old’s name is finally on the trophy.

You can have a biggest 9-4 on Murray to lose in straight sets with Skybet while a Federer victory in four pays 11-4 (various). I reckon Federer will win in four or five with a five-setter success paying 6-1 at Stan James.

Federer, 30, hasn’t won a Grand Slam for two-and-a-half years so it could be argued that is Murray’s best chance of glory to date. A 3-1 success for the Scot is 11-2 with bet365 while a marathin 3-1 is 7-1 at BetVictor.

A solid start could be crucial for as he will find it tough to chase the match against a player of Federer’s quality and experience and bet365 post 11-8 against him flying out of the blocks to capture the opening set. Stan James rate the improving home favourite at 5-4 to clinch the day’s first break of serve.

Recommendation

Federer 3-1
(11-4, various)

John, sorry been watching the game in the pub and will head back down there soon. My tips were posted on the site and the only bets I’ve had are Federer, Federer 3-1, Federer 3-2 and over 3.5 sets which looked OK at 1-2 with Paddy Power.

Craig, saw most of the tennis and happy with 3-1 but sorry for Murray. Nipped out when they were putting roof on to walk the dug so didn’t miss much.

Murray played better for the first set and the majority of the 2nd. The big difference on the day was that he didn’t take his chances when it really counted and u always knew Federer would. Had Fed to win outright and -3.5 games on the handicap so the only consolation was it turned out to be a very profitable day. Great shout Paul with 3-1. Murray is definitely getting closer, he even said so himself.

Alex, I’m missing watching the Bankies so roll on July 21 and a friendly at Dumbarton. Seriously, I can’t wait for the real action to start up and hopefully notch up a few wins.

Hi paul i was just wondering when the next events are that u will be doing tips for? Olympics maybe? Was also hopeful that u would be able to open a wee thread just for general betting tips. Dunno if it would be too much hassle but sometimes i miss tips by danny and craig alves for scandinavian footy tips as they are in random threads. Would be good if u could but i understand u cant just put stuff up for just anything. Cheers for the site anyway am loving it:)

Joe, sorry for not replying earlier. Been away all day at the Daily Record’s golf outing, incidentally won by a certain Frank McGarvey who was very humble indeed as he accepted his prizes from yours truly. Tomorrow I’ll put up something for the midweek football and ask people to comment on that post if they want to put up random tips. I’ll be looking at a few markets this week and will probably do something on the Scottish Open golf. But we won’t be doing loads again until the start of the season. It’s wind-down time for a couple of weeks.

Thanx paul :) Incidentally sounds like u have a hard life……. golfing, watching footie, in the pub, mixing with celebs. Where do u get time for the record column and this website?!?! LOL. Open championship starts next thursday as well. Im not much of a golfer but desperate for sport and olympics isnt doing it for me. Maybe watch some track and field, boxing and wee bit of footie but thats it.

Joe, it’s the close season so not typical weeks to be honest. Plenty of golf despite the rain and I said the other day we’ve just about downed tools on the site for a couple of weeks. Admin guys have left the country as well. Will put up some golf tomorrow and definitely sort out a thread where people like Danny can post tips. When the season starts it will be back to reality.

Bit late with the game kicking off at 6 but I think Augsburg 2 beat Celtic at Evens is a good bet. Augsburg have already played a few friendlies and got promoted 2 the Bundesliga last season. Celtic usually start pretty slow during pre-season too

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Jonathan, you’re right about Celtic but I tend to leave friendlies alone as they are so unpredictable. 0-0 in the end suggests a nothing game.

Joe, funny you should say that. My boy is “dragged” along to watch the Bankies every week but doesn’t mind if he can kick a ball during the game. One of the players at his boys’ club is Paddy Kelly’s son and the other night I found on youtube 20 minutes of Sportscene highlights from Clydebank v Celtic in the Scottish Cup semis in 1990. My boy only watched because his friend’s dad was playing and it was one of Pat’s best games for the Bankies.

Ok thanx danny and craig. R u backing anything today? Paul taking ur boy to bankies game could be seen as a form of child abuse!! LOL. Do u remember the game from 1990? U musta been about 40 then?

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Joe, I remember game in 1990 well because I missed it! Clydebank’s first and only time in Scottish Cup semis and I was on my honeymoon. Tried to arrange an early flight back from Spain to see it but couldn’t get one so had to settle for watching the highlights. Would have felt worse if I’d missed it and we’d won.
