Preston v Middlesbrough
Carabao Cup. Kick-Off: 7.45pm, Tuesday 25th September
PRESTON entertain Middlesbrough tonight in the 3rd Round of the Carabao Cup with both sides hoping to progress to the last 16 and another step towards a Wembley Final.
If you look at the Championship League table you find Preston in bottom place with only one League win and that took place on the opening day of the season, while Middlesbrough sit in second place only behind leaders Leeds United on goal difference.
However tonight is a cup tie and league form goes out the window. As Middlesbrough Manager Tony Pullis has already stated, he intends to make wholesale changes, as he has done in rounds 1 and 2, and play fringe players and academy players.
In Round 1 they needed penalties to get past a Notts County side while they scraped through 2-1 against Rochdale in the 2nd Round. Tonight they will find a Preston side that has saved their best form for this competition. In Round 1 they disposed of Morecambe 3-1 and in Round 2 they caused the shock of the Round by going to Leeds and winning 2-0.
Head to Heads are a little confusing as in the last 11 meetings (going back to 2006) Middlesbrough have won 7 and drawn 4.
Is it time for a Preston win? I also expect a few goals.
