SECOND STEP (1.50) and Mirage Dancer look set for a ding-dong battle in the opening Glorious Stakes at Goodwood. They both run the track extremely well, with Mirage Dancer walloping Euginio by three lengths on his last visit in May.
However, he has a doughty rival in Second Step, second to Poet’s Voice in this race last year when the track was riding very testing. He beat Desert Encounter and Barsanti over course and distance on a quicker surface in May and wins a very narrow vote, with Red Verdon and Eminent not discounted either.
THREADING (2.25), the only filly in the field, is fancied to bounce back from a disappointing effort in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. The track at HQ was quite heavily watered and Threading had earlier produced a tremendous turn of foot on a livelier surface at York’s Dante meeting, sprinting seven lengths clear of Dance Diva. There was nothing wrong with her second to Alpha Centauri in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
With 20 runners going to post for the Unibet Golden Mile, ESCOBAR (3.00) will need an awful lot of luck in running from stall two. However, he ran a cracker at Sandown when chasing home the upwardly mobile Tigre Du Terre and there are no similar three-year-olds lurking in this handicap. With David O’Meara continuing his hot streak, Escobar should be thereabouts granted a rub of the green.
BATTASH (3.35) has to concede weight all round emerging from the widest stall but that shouldn’t prove insurmountable as he bids to supplement last year’s success in the King George Qatar Stakes.
BARITONE (5.15) is a fairly skinny price for such a competitive handicap but Sir Michael Stoute’s colt was an eyecatcher on his handicap debut at Ascot when third to Elwazir. The winner had earlier beaten the smart Cross Counter at Sandown and Baritone, a son of Camelot, will almost certainly improve for the step up in trip.
Hibernicus set the handicapper a headache when strolling home by 12 lengths at Pontefract last Sunday and his initial rating of 90 may well underestimate his potential. He is one of five runners saddled by handicap king Mark Johnston.
ROCK ON BERTIE (5.00) reeled in Bollin Joan over 1m 2f at Beverley, with the runner-up coming out to win twice since off higher marks. He has another two furlongs to travel in a slightly harder contest at Thirsk but looks to be well treated on that evidence.
