REMEMBER Terry Gibson? Well, we've signed him and while he won't be kicking a football he'll be looking into his crystal ball and bringing us his best Spanish tips every week.
The ex-Spurs, Coventry and Manchester United striker is probably best remembered for his time as part of the infamous Wimbledon Crazy Gang side of the late 80s and early 90s. Now an expert in all things La Liga he works as a pundit and co-commentator on Sky Sports’ Spanish football coverage and is a contributor to unibet.
Here he previews the Friday night game.
Girona v Real Betis (Fri 8pm)
The first game of the weekend really should be a good watch and should be competitive. Both teams are chasing a Europa League place and Girona have a five-point deficit on 5th place Betis.
This probably is the last chance for Girona to place any real pressure on their opponents and if Betis win they will be well clear of a team playing their first ever season in the top flight of Spanish football.
Both teams play an attractive style of football and both have surpassed all expectations this season, it really has been an excellent campaign for both. However, I’m just going to go for Real Betis in this game. I toyed with the draw but I’m going to go for the away victory mainly down to current form, confidence and momentum.
Girona surprisingly lost last week 5-0 at Real Sociedad and haven’t won in three. A draw with Levante at home and an away 6-3 defeat at Real Madrid suggests that they may have just reached their pinnacle and maybe the season is just beginning to take its toll. It’s a huge contrast to the form of Betis.
Motivated to try and catch their city rivals Sevilla from a considerable distance behind, they have now won four consecutive games to put themselves into 5th place above Villarreal and now surprisingly three points above Sevilla.
Whoever Quique Setien chooses to play up front for Betis is at the moment scoring goals, be it Lorén Morón or Sergio Leon, and the coach will be delighted to have – in my opinion – his best striker Antonio Sanabria possibly available to play in this game after being given the all clear after four months out with a knee injury. I think he will be on the bench for this one though.
Therefore, I’m going to predict that Betis will get the away win and I’m going for a scoreline of 2-0 with Sergio Leon getting the first of the game.
