REMEMBER Terry Gibson? Well, we've signed him and while he won't be kicking a football he'll be looking into his crystal ball and bringing us his best Spanish tips every week.
The ex-Spurs, Coventry and Manchester United striker is probably best remembered for his time as part of the infamous Wimbledon Crazy Gang side of the late 80s and early 90s. Now an expert in all things La Liga he works as a pundit and co-commentator on Sky Sports’ Spanish football coverage and is a contributor to unibet.
Here are Terry's tips for two Saturday games.
Atletico Madrid v Getafe (12pm)
Will Diego Costa start or will he come on from the bench? My guess is that he will be a substitute but will definitely get some playing time as Simeone will be cautious about introducing a player who hasn’t played at all this season. Costa isn’t the type to ease himself back into things.
Regarding this game’s outcome it should be pretty straightforward. Getafe have faced Atletico 11 times under Simeone’s management and the score is 23-0! It’s nine wins and 2 goalless draws for Atletico and I’ll go as far as to say that the goals for column will still be blank for Getafe after this game.
Getafe are having a decent return to La Liga this season but I still don’t see them having enough to trouble an Atletico team who will be smarting after suffering their first La Liga defeat away at Espanyol just before the Christmas break.
Therefore I’m going for a straightforward 2-0 home win with Antoine Griezmann getting the opening goal as he will definitely start and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Costa get the second in the later stages when he does appear.
Terry's Tips
- Atletico 2, Getafe 0 (23-5, Unibet)
- Griezmann to score first (57-20, Unibet)
- Atletico win to nil (23-25, Unibet)
Sevilla v Real Betis (7.45pm)
This is one of my favourite La Liga games of the season and it’s always worth a watch. The Sevilla derby is never dull and I have high expectations regarding this one.
All change at Sevilla surprisingly with Eduardo Berizzo being sacked just before the Xmas break and replaced by former Fulham favourite Vincenzo Montella.
I actually was his coach for a brief spell at Craven Cottage back in 2007 when the Italian was there on loan from Roma. Despite that he has done okay as a boss in Serie A! Montella’s first act was to reintroduce Steven Nzonzi back into the fold.
I’m wondering if the fallout with Nzonzi was one of the reasons Berizzo lost his job. I’m trying to find a genuine reason as being fifth in the league and qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League clearly wasn’t enough for the demanding club.
Sevilla are clearly a much better team with Nzonzi in it, absolutely no doubt whatsoever and I think it’s a wise decision from the new coach to get him back on board.
As for Betis, they are in a terrible run of form and coach Quique Setien is now the manager under pressure in this intense footballing City.
It is only one win in the last eight and the pressure is building on the coach despite a very pleasing on the eye style of football. I really do hope that Betis stick with him, it’s his first season and they are definitely heading in the right direction but results need to pick up quickly.
He will be helped by the return of striker Ruben Castro who has been out on loan in China and he will be useful in replacing the long term injured Antonio Sanabria. Unfortunately I don’t think the improvement starts in this game for Setien.
I’m predicting a home win based on the return of Nzonzi, the bounce of a new manager and home advantage. I’m going for a tight 2-1 home win with Wissam Ben Yedder starting the scoring.
Terry's Tips
- Sevilla 2, Betis 1 (7-1, Unibet)
- Ben Yedder to score first (18-5, Unibet)
- Both teams to score (61-100, Unibet)
