IT was a cracking Saturday for us last week with Black Ivory (6/1) and William Henry (7/1) two winners from three tips and a very healthy profit.

Well done to those who backed them and hopefully we can find another winner or two this week.  Remember though that the most important factor when trying to stay ahead of the bookies is to find a sensible staking plan that won't bankrupt you in a lean spell.

There's some great racing this weekend although not a whole load of value tips that I have to choose from to be honest.  There are one or two that I am confident enough about at short prices and I might do some doubles and trebles for a laugh but there isn't loads of value in them.

There are two at nice prices that I do like though so we'll start with those first.

1.00pm Navan

It's an unexpected trip across the Irish Sea for my first tip of the day.  MASSEYS WOOD went into my notebook when he won a bumper back in September by 30 lengths.  He hasn't been brilliant over hurdles in two races since but I think he is being underestimated here and looks a nice little each way bet.

The Gigginstown horse Mortal has a form advantage but he had more experience over hurdles than Massey's Wood coming into that race and the return to proper heavy ground will be a bonus for my selection.  The new French recruit for the Mullins/Ricci combo is a total unknown but they are not the invincible force of old and although his third place on Boxing Day was promising it doesn't justify his 3/1 favouritism here I don't think.  Hopefully the headgear will work for Massey's Wood and we get a good run for our money.

2.25pm Ascot

I am going for a speculative one here at a big price in the shape of WHATMORE for the Henry Daly yard.  Daly is in lovely form at the minute as he has been for most of this season and he had high hopes for Whatmore, running him in a listed race at Cheltenham last time.  The horse pulled too hard that day and lost any chance he had but he is still learning and will come on from that.  This isn't quite as tough a race although it is competitive and I think his price is far too big today.  IF Andrew Tinkler can settle him in I think he could spring a surprise at a big price.

I'm just going to tip those two each way bets today but there are also some shorter priced horses that I think will win and are worth mentioning if people like a yankee or a lucky 15.

The first is The New One (2.40 Haydock) who is always so consistent.  He has to give Ch'Tibello 6 pounds but he is rated 7 pounds better and should be good enough to see off the younger horse.

The second one that I like is Waterlord (2.05 Haydock) who Donald McCain seems to be very sweet on and is a decent enough price this morning.

La Bague Au Roi (1.50 Ascot) should have the beating of the rest of the mares in her race and there is still some even money about which seems fair enough to me.

A slightly more speculative one is Acting Lass (3.00 Ascot) who, despite having a strange name for a gelding, should have some more improvement  in him and will go close although the prices aren't particularly generous.

Recommendations:

  • 1.00 Navan – Massey's Wood – 1pt each way at 20/1 with Coral, Paddy Power, Bet 365 and others
  • 2.25 Ascot – Whatmore – 1pt each way at 16/1 with Betfair (paying 4 places each way)
