May 3: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

IT’S one tip from Johnb on Wednesday as he doubles down on Mondialiste at Ascot.

The 7-2 shot is our man’s joint Nap and NB as he looks to bounce back with a winner after a second and a third on Tuesday left him 7pts down for May.

Well done everyone who posted a winner and special mention to Alanm who landed a full house for a cracking 30pts profit.

Johnb’s Wednesday Tip

What would appear a decent day for me, actually wasn’t all that great. Really need to back all my picks in singles, as well as the small stake multiples.

    Each way Yankee
    6.40 Power Power 13/2 now 5/1 PLACED
    7.10 Abjar 4/1 now 7/1 NOWHERE
8.00 Gabrial The Thug 6/1 now 7/2 WON
    8.40 Mighty Zip 7/1 now 2/1 NOWHERE

    Win Yankee tonight
7.30 Masterson 11/10 now 5/4 WON (DEAD HEAT)
    7.40 Ickymashoo 5/2 now 3/1 LOST
    8.10 Zac Brown 5/2 WON 3/1
9.00 Prince of Time 2/1 now 5/2 WON

Since Friday I have now had two 2/3 trixies, and two 3/4 Yankees. Not seeing huge profit due to not always backing in singles too. Think I need to start readjusting the way I bet.

      juicin 12 months ago

Hi mate, if you do not think 3/4 on a yankee is a decent day, then you cannot be doing things correctly. You need a 100pt bank for your multiples and a relatively level stake. Then of course, it is important to return profits to your bank, not go out and spend them, negating your hard work.

Let’s say you had a 20p yankee yesterday, that would have returned a profit of £9.63, not a lot to go shopping with but it is another free 4x20p Yankees.. where you could possibly hit a bigger 4/4. I would also increase my chances of losing by adding longer priced horses, a risk vs reward balance that a betting calculator could help you weigh up.

Remember the odds are smart tacked against the punter enough, so to bet without are plan only contributes towards filling the bookies pockets. Not earth moving advice but best of luck mate.

Thank you for your replies. Yesterday I placed 50p unit stakes on the win Yankee, which returned £19.77. So a profit of £14.27. However, I also placed that 25p each way Yankee, which returned a loss of £4. On top of this, I also placed 4 x £2 trebles and a £1 4fold on 4 well fancied horses ranging from 6/4 – 2/1. Only 1 won, making another £9 loss. And finally, a 75p each way trixie, which returned nothing, so another £6 loss. So a £5 loss on the day overall. Obviously where I went wrong yesterday is glaringly obvious. Too many multiples. Admittedly though, my knowledge and interest in flat racing is much less than jumps. So yesterday was more a bit of fun for interest than anything serious. I’m off work at the moment, and have been for 3 weeks now, so racing is getting me through most days! If I wish to make regular profit from racing, then I certainly need to start taking advice like you have given, and take the betting more seriously rather than so many “fun” bets. For me personally, I feel much more confident with jumps racing than I do with flat turf racing. I even feel I have better chance of returning profit from AW racing than flat turf. Especially this early on in the flat season.
          thanks again for your replies.
          best of luck today

I’ve gambled like this for too long mate. No wonder I’ve rarely made regular profit!! I don’t have as much knowledge as several people on here, but I do have enough to know better lol. I see horse racing as more “fun” than serious betting. To be fair, it’s the same with football betting for me too. Small stake multiples hoping for a decent payout, rather than bank building singles/doubles. I just feel to make those types of bets worthwhile I need to put more sizeable sums down, which takes away the fun element. But then the profit long term is likely to be better than all these losing multiples, with only a few showing decent profit. Pros and cons to both. Discipline is so key to long term profits

Thoughts on Blue Point tomorrow in the 3.45 at Ascot? There’s definitely money going for him as he shortened from 2/1 to 6/4 today.

Doesn’t mondialiste course form worry you.
      3rd of 8
      14th of 30
      11th of 13.
Finished 11 of 13 when last seen in Dubai.
Do you think he will be fit and is the ease in grade the reason for your confidence.

    Evening all,

Today wasn’t my day as the saddle slipped on Bahamian Sunrise shortly after leaving the stalls and Plead went down by a head. That’s now two days in a row where everything has gone against me -hopefully that’s the end of it. I’m putting up one early value bet for tomorrow and may add to it in the morning.

    16.10 Wolverhampton – Jalela 11/10

This horse went straight into my tracker after a debut full of promise in the Wood Ditton. She raced up with the pace throughout and looked likely to go on and beat the boys within the last furlong before being reeled in late on. The finishing distance doesn’t tell the whole story as she was hampered late on by the winner (otherwise It would have been much closer). The speed figure for that race is impressive and I think it’s a piece of form to keep on side. She returns to the track today over a slightly longer trip and on a new surface, both of which on breeding will suit. Drawn well in 5 and racing against fillies only everything looks in place for a big run with normal improvement expected. 11/10 rates as value in my early book as I have her down as a 4/7 shot. Therefore, I am happy to play 7.5 points to win @ 11/10 this evening – but as always nothing is assured. The main danger is Spinnaka, but the time figure from her race on the Rowley mile was not as good as the one recorded by Jelela, and while she may improve for the step up in trip she has a wide draw to overcome.

Many thanks and GL to all

(Points will be updated in the morning).

    Mondialiste NAP/NB

I think the course form is pretty decent for Mondialiste, 3rd of 8 Mondialiste was still 6 lengths clear of 4th,
14th of 30 in the Royal Hunt Cup, the draw went against Mondialiste but he did finish 3rd of 15 on the stands side
Then 11th of 13 in the Queen Anne Stakes, it was a top class field and the ground was too soft,
He should be race fit after a run 39 days ago and I think it’s a bit embarrassing that the bookies haven’t made Mondialiste favourite, he was the Arlington Million winner just nine months ago and he was put up by me to win the Arlington race at 4/1
If it was a handicap he would be giving weight away but instead he is getting 3lb from the favourite Ennaadd
With the stalls on the stands side you are better being drawn high, Mondialiste is drawn 2 but with only 7 runners it shouldn’t be a problem

My best tracked day on the site yesterday, clawing back 10pts, now sit around -13pts.

    0.25 yankee 2.75pts and 1pt singles on all, 6.7 5pts.

    #235a – Icespire 6/5
Very short, even for a frankel filly but a winner is a winner, big chance from top connections.
    #310a – harbour law 7/1
Only 2 fresh horses in this race and dalgleish/makin has been very good to me but i think the selection is the value selection, despite giving away weight to the field, yard going great guns.
    #400p – mittens 2/1
Without knowing I picked alan’s nap yesterday and today is no different, let’s hope for the same result.
    #345a – blue point 6/4
Strong favourite, 45k purse which should see him giving it his best.

Not a great day but not the end of the world and a couple of lessons learnt!

Icespire lost on the bob of a head despite coming from the back and seeing its initial route blocked, I made a mistake backing it in the single as a winning 6/5 doesn’t justify the initial risk for me.

We ask too much of harbour law it seems coming back from the break, top weight, raced wide for periods, didn’t look in racing shape either. Not one to dismiss yet.

Mittens! Looked like we had every chance, we have simply been done by the distance, the extra 2f have not helped at all (this time) and I can only say she is one to mull over next time out.

The straightforward pick – blue point obliged as most knew, returning at 13/8.

We lost 4.12pts today, points up tomorro, approx -17. Well done winners.

    May 9pts down

    Authors Dream 2/1 bet365

Teodoro 6/1 NAP/NB paddy power (double stake)

    Double 18.25/1 paddy power

    Authors Dream
No surprise to anyone that I have again gone for Authors Dream, I thought the horse was unlucky last time after being tipped at 10/1 before being gambled into 2/1 favourite, he was slow away last time and was still challenging for last place turning for home, he also had to come very wide round that last bend and was getting bumped, but he went on to lead a furlong out and was only just caught late on, the front two had pulled away from the others and with a better start and more luck in running he should be winning this as he is the horse open to more improvement, a change of jockey sees him running 6lb higher but that shouldn’t be a problem

There have been a few recently but Richard Kingscote ride on Teodoro last time out was so bad at trying to disguise the fact he was only out for a run that it was, it’s things like this that I like taking advantage of but because he did it so badly I think even the bookies could see it
If connections wanted to land a touch then they did exactly the right thing last time buy dropping him in distance when actually he wanted to go up in distance which he is on Tuesday, last time he was held up at the back in a slow run race and when the tempo quickened before the home straight he was just given a hands and heels ride, the step up to 9f will suit better, two runs ago he was beat by Stradivarius, never travelling well and weakened but also eased a furlong from home, on debut he was beat by another tip of mine recently in Atty Persse so his chances on form look excellent on Tuesday and on a low mark of 69 he looks well in here (more news to follow)

Well done to the winners today. Blue Point seems to have been a popular choice so well done if you were on.
One tonight i just have to have an ew on is

Drops down to class 5 for the first time since winning in that class off a mark of 73 and is off 67 tonight with Lulu Stanford taking a further 5lbs off its back. Fav looks strong being unpenalised for latest win but at the odds will take my chances

Remember waiting in Until Midnight for a full house on a Yankee 2nd last run and it was a 2nd after doing the dressage coming out the stalls but finished really well. Last run not too baddest DC so Ew at 10s looks good to me . 👍
