HAVING suffered such bad fortune with the weather earlier in the year it is Southwell that comes to the rescue, providing the only action in Britain and Ireland today.
Here are my thoughts with a Southwell placepot to follow.
1.25pm – Lucky Mountain shaped as if amiss last time and would have a little bit to find with Royal Skies and Edwin Ralph but it may be worth including all three runners in the Southwell opener, particularly as none of the trio have raced on the fibresand surface. We will hope the outsider Lucky Mountain takes a liking to Southwell and knocks plenty of lines out.
2pm – Honest Strike is the obvious selection, his form in the book at Southwell an obvious asset. He has, however, reportedly bled on his two most recent outings so may not be one to bank on. Linroyale Boy is yet to win at Southwell but has plenty of respectable efforts to his name and should once again give a good account of himself, hopefully ensuring we progress to the third leg.
2.35pm – Upper Lambourn shaped as if he was still in good form when finishing fourth here last time and the fact all four of his career wins have come at this venue makes him of interest. The Michael Appleby-trained Thorpe Bay is also of interest having finished second here on his debut for the yard four days ago. Appleby has been prolific at Southwell this year and all of his runners deserve consideration.
3.10pm – Few horses seem to relish the fibresand surface like Dubai H ills, who boasts an unbeaten record at Southwell, winning on all five starts, and he rates as banker material in the fourth leg. He produced a career-best earlier in the month, romping clear to score by five lengths, and ought to prove hard to beat, for all that he faces an improving rival in Frontier Fighter.
3.45pm – There was a bit of encouragement to take from Mataajir’s most recent effort at Kempton and returning to seven furlongs should be in his favour. However, he was possibly flattered by coming off a strong early pace so we will take him on with San Jose City and Michael’s Nook. The former has slipped to a good mark and shaped better than the result over a mile at Kempton, his effort flattening out late on, suggesting the step back to seven furlongs may suit. The latter has failed to make an impact in two starts on fibresand but there were valid excuses for his most recent defeat and he appears to be in good heart and is weighted to strike.
4.20pm – It is a worry including horses that have never raced on this unique surface, particularly those starting at short odds and likely to command a large proportion of the pool, but Bispham Green’s turf efforts last year set a clear standard and he should be too good for his rivals.

Doncaster abandons as Newbury checks at 10am

THE William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster will now be run next Saturday (March 30) after snow forced the track to abandon today’s meeting, while the jumps card at Newbury is subject to a second inspection at 10am.
Three inches of snow overnight extinguished hopes that Doncaster could beat the weather for a second successive day and a quick decision has been made to restage the Flat season curtain-raiser in a week’s time.
Mark Spincer, managing director at Doncaster, tweeted: “Racing today is abandoned after threes inches of snow and still snowing. We will re-run the card next Saturday with tickets transferred.”
Despite passing an initial inspection first thing, Newbury will now check again at 10am.
The track had light snow overnight but it has become heavier and officials have decided to look again in a few hours.
Clerk of the course Richard Osgood: “We passed the 7am inspection and then the snow started to come down, although most of it is quite wet.
“It’s very light and isn’t settling. The access roads are fine but we’ll inspect again at 10am.”
Southwell has had snow overnight but the track has been worked and no problems are currently anticipated.

Call Me A Star was useful in bumpers. Not really gone on from promising start over hurdles when winning at Uttoxeter, not having to be at best when landing odds last time. Proven on ground and will stay this far.
Queens Grove has been much improved of late, making it 4 wins in a row at Fontwell on Boxing Day. Found out in better company at Ascot last time but return against her own sex will help.
Mickie is a progressive mare who showed plenty of improvement for the step up to this trip when scoring over hurdles at Ludlow. No match for The New One and Prima Porta last 2 starts but beat the rest readily.
Natural Spring readily scored at Market Rasen in May (21f) and has since won a jumpers’ bumper. Best effort yet when close fourth in competitive handicap at Kempton last time. Acts on soft but unraced on heavy.
Hidden Identity is an Irish bumper winner who has won 3 mares novice hurdles at up to 2½m this term, including 4-runner event at Carlisle most recently. Didn’t convince with jumping that day, though.
Highland Retreat made a successful start over hurdles at Exeter. Better form when placed in 3 handicaps since and back to winning ways in novice at Taunton last time. Unlikely to be far away.
Eleven Fifty Nine was useful in bumpers last term. Promise all 3 starts over hurdles, landing odds at Doncaster last time. Opening mark looks fair and well worth a try at this trip.
Umadachar is a bumper winner who relished stiffer test when opening hurdling account at Folkestone. Flopped next time but back on the up when winning at Sedgefield in first-time cheekpieces last time.
Alder Mairi got back to winning ways after flying too high in listed company when stringing out rivals at Wincanton (2m) in February. Good second at Exeter next time but improvement needed off this mark.
Too Generous is 2 from 2 in bumpers and off the mark second run over hurdles when scooting clear in 2½m Fontwell mares event on Boxing Day. Made to work very hard to land odds at Plumpton next time, though.
Glorious Twelfth is a bumper winner who coasted home in weak event maiden hurdle at Huntingdon in January. Comfortably held off this mark at Ludlow last time, though, and others preferred.
Ballinahow Star had plenty up her sleeve when landing a brace of Wincanton novice hurdles at up to 2¾m in the mud in December. Potential to do much better now handicapping, so worth considering.
Scholastica is a dual bumper winner who left hurdling debut well behind when easily winning at Uttoxeter in November. Creditable placed efforts next 2 starts and remains open to improvement.
Toubeera was a dual bumper winner for Michael Smith in 2011. Good third in Sandown listed event on second run back after a long absence but shaped as if amiss last time.
Va’vite won a Newton Abbot bumper for Brendan Powell in August and went in at Bangor on hurdling debut last month. Not seen to best effect at Catterick next time but back to winning ways at Towcester since.
September Blaze has shown just modest form in 2 bumpers but much improved when third (2 lengths behind Call Me A Star) in a 2m mares novice at Doncaster. Confirmed that form next time but opening mark looks very harsh.
Grace And Fortune is a modest maiden who ran well when placed last 3 starts, but unlikely to be breaking her duck in this.
Wilde Ruby is a bumper winner who landed a pair of handicap hurdles at up to 27f in June. Patchy form since and headgear now applied.

A very competitive event but Eleven Fifty Nine has yet to show her hand at this sort of trip and is bound to improve for it. She can make a winning handicap bow at the main expense of Ballinahow Star and Highland Retreat.

Dubai Hil ls ls has an excellent record around here, and looked better than ever when making a winning return over C&D recently. Makes plenty of appeal.
Roninski got back to winning ways at Redcar and creditable in-frame efforts next 5 outings. Left Bryan Smart after final 2012 start and not at best on Monday’s return for new yard. 2nd Preference.
Docofthebay has several creditable efforts in big-field handicaps in first half of last year, and landed 7f handicap here before finishing fifth in Wolverhampton listed event recently.
Frontier Fighter only made his debut on Boxing Day but has quickly made up into a useful performer, recording third win when easy winner at Wolverhampton last week. Easy C&D winner previously and big player.
The Lock Master has made the frame both outings since regaining winning thread over C&D in February, though was beaten a long way last time and others more likely. 2nd Preference.
Dr Red Eye is a front runner who scored twice with cheekpieces applied last summer. Ended 2012 in good form but just respectable efforts both starts this year and needs to raise his game.
Caldercruix’s last 2 wins have come here, including 7f event on latest outing earlier this month. Return to 1m not a problem and respected given record here.

This looks a potential match between the fast-improving Frontier Fighter and course-specalist Dubai Hil ls, the latter narrowly preferred.

The most valuable race on the card sees seven runners competing over a mile and there’s likely to be no quarter given with several horses than like to race prominently in opposition. The possibility of competition up front may tilt the balance in favour of a hold-up horse, and Bryan Smart’s Dubai Hil ls (15:10) seems to fit that brief. The seven-year-old has been successful on his last five visits here, returning from a four-month break with a career-best effort over course-and-distance last time when staying on well to wear down long-time leader Dubawi Island inside the final furlong. A 10 lb weight rise notwithstanding, he can add to his tally today.

Guido, a few weeks ago Milesey had mentioned the horse and I was in the bookies with my dug Milly, who is usually mucky but had just had a bath. Race was about to go off so stuck a fiver on each way at I think 33s and it won in a photo finish.

LITTLE JIMMY completed a hat-trick over C&D earlier this month and is very tough to oppose in this sort of mood. The Passing Glance gelding is now a full 15lb higher than when scoring at Lingfield on similar ground at the start of February, but he beat Sawpit Supreme with ease here latest and seems to thrive in these smaller fields.

Tommy Stack traditionally has his string well forward at this time of year and his BIRD’S EYE VIEW looks very interesting on her handicap debut off an opening mark of 79. The JP McManus-owned filly finished third behind Aidan O’Brien’s subsequent Group 3 winner Nephrite in her juvenile campaign, and was successful on her sole run at three over this C&D last term. With testing ground known to suit, she could get the upper hand

YELLOW ROSEBUD should be able to concede weight all round. Dermot Weld’s filly didn’t make much of an impact when seventh in the 1,000 Guineas here last May but she went on to post three highly creditable efforts, signing off in October with victory in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes over the extended 7f at Tipperary. She enjoys getting her toe into the ground and is open to further improvement this term

WINTER’S untimely return put paid to the hopes of turf racing in Britain and Ireland on Saturday but there are no such issues anticipated for Sunday’s meetings.
The weather gods smiled on Wincanton and no inspection is planned for Sunday’s jumps card.
“We’re perfectly raceable now,” said clerk of the course Barry Johnson on Saturday afternoon. “We had heavy rain on Friday but nothing since this morning. It might touch freezing tonight but I wouldn’t be worried about that and there’s no rain or snow forecast. The going is heavy.”
It’s a similar story for the day’s other turf meeting at the Curragh and for the all-weather fixture at Lingfield. Lingfield clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross anticipates no issues, while scattered showers are unlikely to hinder the start of the turf season in Ireland, although the going is expected to be testing.
Monday’s outlook is not as promising after the meetings at Taunton and Towcester were abandoned on Saturday, leaving Lingfield as the sole surviving fixture.
