SOME surprise results in Serie A made it a bad day even before day turned into night.
My Super Single and top tips went down with the Italians and while I don't like chasing losses I thought I'd recouped some of them with a 7-4 Daily Double on West Ham not to lose and Juventus. But we know what happened there.
With the benefit of hindsight I'd have gone West Ham draw no bet for the Super Single but Everton were well tipped on the site and at the end of the day unlucky to lose.
So it was a bad day at the office, mainly due to the Serie A results, and hopefully there won't be too many more like it.
It's a quieter night on Wednesday with the main game being Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid in the Spanish Cup and I'll have a separate preview on that one.
In other ties it's Villarreal v Real Sociedad, Almeria v Getafe and Valencia v Espanyol and I'll take a better look at those in the morning before putting up tips.
And in the French league Lille tackle Evian while Braga will be well backed against Belenenses in the Portuguese Cup.
Lille have only two wins in 18 matches so BetVictor's 7-10 about a home win can't be taken without any confidence. It was 2-2 when the sides met earlier this season so both to score looks a good shout.
I don't like betting on JP Trophy games but I'm tempted by Preston at home to Walsall in the first leg of the Northern Final. I was interested to hear Preston boss Simon Grayson say after his side's FA Cup defeat of Norwich at the weekend that he rested players because the JP Trophy was more important with this side close to a Wembley appearance.
Preston are unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions and there display against Norwich was impressive with half a first team.
Grayson's men have won all four of their home cup clashes this season but lost 3-1 at Walsall in the league so that will give the visitors some hope. However, at this stage I'll be on Preston at 5-6 with boylesports.
Having studied team news and form for all the matches I'm taking Preston plus Valencia as a double. When Grayson said Preston were resting players for this game I was convinced to back them while Valencia should be close to full strength tonight.
Valencia, who have won six of their last seven at home to Espanyol, are in the opposite half of the draw from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid and have a great chance of going all the way.
The Atletico-Real game is tough to call with both to score the best bet with the last six meetings at the Vicente Calderon going that way – and all over 2.5 goals.
Villarreal beat Real Sociedad 4-0 in the league last month – the only bad result Davie Moyes's side have suffered – but it seems as if they'll rotate their squad tonight and with Moyes also making changes after his side's defeat of Barcelona it also looks one to leave alone.
The Super Single profit for 2015 could be wiped out tonight and as I'm taking a big chance I'm putting up a 3.25pts pick while the double will be a four-pointer.
There have been a lot of tips on the Gateshead-Woking match in the COnference Premier with most going for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals and the stats suggest that will be the case.
But I'm chancing Gateshead to win at a biggest 13-10 with Coral and I know it's a risky win. Both sides are in poor form in the Conference with Gateshead without a win in four and Woking seeing no victories in seven.
Gateshead though looked half decent despite Saturday's 7-0 FA Cup defeat at West Brom. They were the better sides until conceding a 40th-minute opener and even Mark Lawrenson said for the first they looked like the Premier League team.
That's some assessment and surely the north-east and the display could be a tide turned for the north-east side who showed play-off form earlier in the season. Woking too looked set for the play-offs until the loss of top scorer Scott Rendell coincided with a run of two points in 18.
Rendell hit 14 goals before suffering a foot injury and is unlikely to be ready to return tonight. Woking have received a boost though with the news on-loan Ipswich player Jack Marriott has extended his loan deal until the end of the season despite reports he had left the club.
So it's Gateshead for me but please if that concerns you at all leave it out or go for the alternative goals bet – and remember my confidence is reflect by a 3.25pts stake.

Your understanding of West Ham not losing was spot on. I went for A EVERTON win and yes I knew it was a risky bet but it happens. It would of been fantastic if they scored a very late goal and won the game but not to be they were lucky to get one on the night.

Hi all, just been reading that Atletico may have an eye on playing Barca in the league at the weekend on top of this fixture. I don’t feel that they’re as strong as they were last season either. Simeone has said that they will attack and in my opinion that would quite possibly lead to allowing the best attack in football to exploit it, so I’ve gone with Real over 1.5 team goals at evens on 365. You may well find a better price elsewhere but I’m not really one for looking around.

As a true blue Evertonian and having gone to the match tonight and also having my acca let down by my own team,I must advise EVERYONE betting on any Everton match till the end of the season that the only bets you are to do on my team with any confidence really are BTTS and mostly +2.5gls in our games,we are sooo bad at the minute in defence and way too slow to attack compared to last year. A quick note on the Preston game. Just remember not to ignore Walsall’s recent away form as its been very good considering some of the teams they have played. Besides all that, it looks a Preston win or draw.
I have been thinking about a system the past couple of days based around an article that Kevin Pullein of the RP had on Monday. I don’t know if it caught anyone’s eye but it discusses the validity and reliability of the statistics we gather from our betting research. It concludes:
“The most reliable on-field stats in football are those for passing and shooting. There is a stronger correlation between seasons for passing and shooting than for anything else. Passing and shooting are also the on-field validity. Validity, in each case, is lower than reliability. There is, though, a stronger correlation with goals scored for passing and shooting than for anything else.”
So purely basing this on the premiership with each teams potential for goals being scored (on these two stats) to help predict a match winner. I started by ranking each team by ‘Shots per game’ and their ‘Pass Success Ranking’, creating a league table as such for each stat as each team were ranked 1st to 20th. I done this for all sides twice, one when they play at home and one when they are away. For example Arsenal have the most shots with 19.6 per game and they are ranked 4 for their pass success rate, this gives them an equal rating as Man City (3+2) and Chelsea (2+3) of 5 so they are all joint 1st in the ‘Home’ league.
So, taking this weekends fixtures to start off with. I take the ranking for the away team and substitute the ranking of the home team and produce these figures: 12, 7, -14, 5, 1, 2, -7, 15, -13, -10
What I am aiming for is the biggest difference between the two so I remove the 5, 1, 2 and 7 matches. Leaving us with 5 possible ties which have double digits difference. Chelsea and Arsenal are two sides but because their odds are 1/5 and 1/2 respectively I removed them in search of value and was left with: Liverpool (19/20), Tottenham (15/13) and Man Utd (4/5). It was at this point I decided to include recent form, mainly due to Man Utd vs. Southampton being highlighted.
Basing it on the points gained in the last 6 games:
Sunderland vs. Liverpool = 6-9 = -3
Crystal Palace vs. Tottenham = 4-14 = -10
Man Utd vs. Southampton = 12-10 = 2
I feel this criteria helps sort the opportunities/threats even more as it further highlights Tottenham who haven’t lost in six games, facing Crystal Palace who haven’t won in six. The form tables can also be adjusted for the teams at home and away which makes a better argument for Liverpool (3rd in away form) vs. Sunderland (19th in home form).
So I will follow this for now with some interest and see what results it produces, let me know your thoughts on all the above.

I was at Anfield in November for the Stoke game. Did a pre-match bet at the unibet booth, it won (35 pounds). After the game the booth was closed and they said I could claim it online. Tried to do that but you have to be a UK user to claim it (I’m Dutch). It is quite easy to claim it, you only need the coupon code and your username. I have contacted the customer service, but they weren’t very helpful. First saying they would transfer the money to my account and later to send out a cheque. But none of this happened yet.
Anyone who can help out? This is too easy for them.

I have decided to have a closer look at the Atletico v Real match and I think I may have come up with a goal scoring trend which pays a tidy 21/10.
Looking back over the previous 10 games played between these two sides in all competitions from the being of 2013, I have noticed that in 7 of the games there has been more 1st half goals, in 2 of the games more in the 2nd half and only 1 of the games having an equal split between both halves.
Now I would have guessed before checking that these games would usually be cagey affairs with Atletico defending and keeping it tight 1st half but it appears not to be the case.

Best Bettor Evah – I don’t see it as fire with fire really. Football is a game where one team has to score more than the other. Based on Pullein’s article about the validity and reliability of statistics in sports and football (more specifically passing and shooting) I am using this ‘system’ to try and rate teams on their ability to score vs. Their opponents ability.
Of course I haven’t looked at teams defensive records or, to go further in depth, the likes of Stoke who lead the league in aerial duels or even West Ham who are leading in goals from set pieces. But the bookies certainly look at everything and plug it into some massive algorithm which helps them set the game odds and all other markets obscure and otherwise…number of cards and corners?
Why try and beat them at their own game? It’s impossible. And anyway the more factors I put into my table, the more and more it started looking like the actual league table which made it pointless. I can tell you from stats Man City and Chelsea are the dogs danglies, Man Utd are good at Home, Arsenal throw games away (can’t stress enough that if they had a better defence it would aid them so much-based on stats alone and not the obvious) No, this isn’t fire with fire, rather this approach will bring it back to basics; we are better at scoring goals than you are. Take into account the recent form of the highlighted teams and then by removing any short odds in an attempt to find (a degree of) value, it could maybe result in profit in the long term – I don’t know for sure but I did want to post it on here in case it benefits anyone somehow – Even if it means they rethink their research/stats and their reliability and validity. I don’t post very often as I don’t have a lot of free time these days but I have been around here about a year or two now and I owe this site and it’s members so anything I can give back I will.

Was 2 from 4 for me yesterday, and ended up a pound down. The Genoa match had a surprising amount of goals and an early red card in the Palermo match rather scuppered the BTTS in that match.
Today there isn’t much for me. Madrid derby is difficult to call. Atletico have won the last 2 meeting but as of late the Real team has been unplayable. Saying that, teams who lose after a long winning run tend to stumble for a couple of games. Atletico do look overpriced but for me it’s a no bet.
Palestino have been mention and look a decent bet. Also tempted by Zamalek in the Egyption division who are top of the league and have never lost today’s fixture.

top tip terry, I only do shop betting because I walk the dog down to the shops. There’s a Hills and a Ladbrokes but prices in shops are generally poor as everyone knows. Ladbrokes, however, have their Top Teams Top Prices coupon which isn’t bad and the football odds terminal prices can be competitive.
Shop odds are generally a lot worse than bookies online business.

I have decided to have a closer look at the Atletico v Real match and I think I may have come up with a goal scoring trend which pays a tidy 21/10.
Looking back over the previous 10 games played between these two sides in all competitions from the being of 2013, I have noticed that in 7 of the games there has been more 1st half goals, in 2 of the games more in the 2nd half and only 1 of the games having an equal split between both halves.
Now I would have guessed before checking that these games would usually be cagey affairs with Atletico defending and keeping it tight 1st half but it appears not to be the case.

I don’t know about anyone else but im glad all the holidays are finished and we finally return to decent football cards! Friday is the start of it!
Feels like it’s been rubbish card after rubbish card with games scattered about all over the place! New year usually provides 3 or 4 full UK cards but this year for some reason matches were all played on different days!

My Atletico dnb tip looking good. I was a little unsure when i saw the line ups, I read the team news about predicted line ups from Sky sports spain expert Balague, who believed Real Madrid would field a weakened side, due to not giving a fuss about the cup. Tonight I’ve no problem with my two tips – Gateshead a goal short but from their twitter had plenty of chances and two disallowed. I watched the Preston game and it could have gone either way but fair play to Walsall who stood up to them well. Didn’t touch the Atletico-Real game as team news was sketchy.

pslh, it’s a long shot as you know. Have you looked at any stats? None of Shrewsbury’s last 6 have been btts and they are pretty tight on the road. Elche have never scored against Barca and it looks like Sevilla will rest half a team at Granada.
