IT’S a clean slate for John with the start of a new month and he’s targeting a winning start with his double-stake tip.

Our man finished 54pts down for January after his Nap was beaten by a neck yesterday.

Johnb’s Wednesday Tip

Kempton 2:20
American Patrol 11-10 NAP/NB bet365 (double stake)

Not much I can say about this horse after last time when he won for us in what was a bit of a coup. Advised at 13-2 American Patrol won at 11-10. My write-up last time highlighted that this horse hadn’t really been given a fair chance to win as he was ridden conservatively and not asked to do much, I also highlighted Neil Mulholland’s record on the all weather especially when calling on the services of Adam Kirby, which is now 3 wins and 1 placed from 6 rides in the last 12 months. I also highlighted that this horse was better than a 55 rated horse and he is now rated 61 but that shouldn’t stop him here as he looks a horse that should be a lot higher and American Patrol should get us off to a winning start for February.

    Evening all,

A very small profit for myself today to round of a profitable January. 3 selections for tomorrow with one increased selection.

    16.00 Hereford – Pacha Du Polder 11/8

The class horse in this field who has been known more recently for his exploits under Victoria Pendleton, but there is no joke about his quality. He showed over the summer he can still mix it in regulation rules races (finished 3rd in the listed Summer Cup at Uttoxeter) and back into a hunter chase tomorrow he can stamp his class on this field. His record in the top hunter chases at Aintree and Cheltenham is impressive (2/5/6) and with a more experienced jockey I think he would have made the places in the foxhunters at the festival last year (finished 5th). He is a supreme jumper of fences and has proved this over the national fences (ignore his unseat at Fakenham- Pendleton thought she was in the velodrome). Conditions will be fine and the slight drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue as he trotted up over 2 and a half at Wincanton last year. The benefits of a hunter chase mean even though he is the highest rated horse they he carries the same weight as most of his rivals. Fitness shouldn’t be an issue as he was seen having a spin over the cross country course at Cheltenham just 6 days ago and Nichols has stated they are planning another tilt at the Cheltenham fox hunters this year with his route to the festival starting tomorrow. The excellent Bryony Foster takes the ride and her experience will be critical. In my early tissue I have him down as a 5/6 shot so the 11/8 around at the moment looks very generous. With all criteria met I have to increase my stake- but as always nothing is assured (15pnts win).

    16.10 Leicester – Lazer Light 3/1

I think this horse as been crying out for the drop back in trip ever since I tipped him up at Ascot a few months ago. He hit the front that day but his stamina let him down. Last time out at Southwell he disappointed at short odds over 3miles but travelled like the best horse into the race- fading late on. He is an undoubtably talented horse with some very strong form in the book and his extra experience hurdling could be the difference tomorrow. This does look a very competitive race with a number with chances but I think there is every chance that with a strong pace Lazer Light can go very close (1.5pnts win).

    18.00 Newcastle – ReRun 7/1 EW

I’ve followed this horse for most of his short career after I got a word for him on debut at Ayr’s western meeting. I put him up last time at Lingfield when he was sent off a well backed 5/4 but I don’t think the tight nature of the course suited him. He makes the switch to handicaps tomorrow and his mark of 77 could well be within reach. The stable think very highly of this horse and sent him to France for a listed contest two starts back and as I said last time at Lingfield he was backed as if he couldn’t get beaten. He returns to Newcastle tomorrow, the location of his best run to date when he finished second to a very promising horse and the return to a galloping track is also a positive. At around 7/1 he looks like a decent each way bet (0.75 pnts each way).

Many thanks and GL to all

    January’s stats:

    • 27.33 Points Profit Overall
• Return On Investement
= 1.08
• 8 Profitable increased stake bets from 17 (47%) – with a profit of 32.45 points.

My worst month on the site since I started back in November but a profitable one nonetheless. Highlights included One For Arthur winning at 14/1, Champagne West at 11/1 and increase selection Lifeboat Mona winning at 11/4.

    Overall (Since November):
    • 172.08 Points up
• ROI = 1.23
• 18 Profitable Increased Stake Selections from 34 bets (53%) with a profit of 160.39 points.

Thanks EW Thief – great work from yourself lately.

Just to say connections have done the right thing and taken Pacha Du Polder out of the 4.00 as the ground has become nigh on bottomless. Good to see connections make a conscious decision like that- it means we as punters are not just throwing money away.

        Thanks

Not sure what to make of this, not until more information is available but interesting

PLANS TO BRING RACING TO LONDON’S STREETS

NOT one but two companies are in competition to bring horseracing to the streets of London’s city centre.

Cycling and Formula One events have featured regularly on the streets of some of the world’s biggest cities and now the prospect of horses thundering through London is a real possibility, with the BHA confirming it has spoken to the team behind one of the bids.

Racing consultant Johnno Spence suggested his company, which has held talks with the BHA, could have an event in London as early as September this year, while Olly Neil, behind a bid by GAG 403 Limited, said they were hoping to announce in the first quarter of this year the venue for their inaugural event in 2018.

Neil said: “We will create a global circuit of horseracing events with high-quality local horses thundering down iconic city streets ridden by the world’s top jockeys. We’re going to do for horseracing what Twenty20 has done for cricket and 3×3 for basketball – reinterpreting the Sport of Kings for a young urban audience and dialling up on technology, entertainment, excitement and energy.”

Spence, whose rival bid goes under the name City Racing, said: “We’re looking into a city-centre international racing series, which is very exciting, but first we need to get the commercial model in place. We’re working with an industry-backed consortium looking to run under the rules of racing and we’re at quite an advanced stage.

“We could have our first event in London as early as September this year, with the series expanding around the world over the next few years.”

    BHA approval needed

BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey warned that bringing the plans to fruition would not be straightforward.

He said: “Any proposal would require BHA approval and clearly there are significant issues, including logistical and welfare-related, that would need to be addressed before any application could be processed.”

Reacting to the possibility, Great British Racing’s Rod Street said: “The ‘street racing’ concept has appeared in a few different iterations over the years. A number of operators have claimed to be close to delivering something.

“In principle, I’m very supportive of any initiative that presents horseracing in an exciting way to a broader audience. The notion of races being run in the nation’s capital sounds fun and I imagine the public would enjoy it.

“I can see what an attractive proposition this could be if done properly and racing should be open to such entrepreneurial initiatives.”

Just arrived in a drizzly Leicester from an even more drizzly north wales.
Quick walk into town for 2 big macs for energy then a 2 mile hike up the a6 to the course.

    Rich Ricci’s Cheltenham Countdown Column

Every Tuesday between now and Cheltenham – and the meeting begins in just seven weeks – leading owner and BetBright Chairman Rich Ricci will pen a countdown blog.

Ricci’s famous pink and green colours have been carried to many big race wins over the past few years but the days just passed – with Annie Power ruled out of Cheltenham with injury, and both Faugheen and Min missing Sunday’s meeting at Leopardstown – was one of the more challenging weeks for Faugheen’s owner…
As spells of bad news goes, these few days have been pretty concentrated to say the least. It was tough, it’s part of the game – we all know that – but it doesn’t make it any easier.
Wednesday’s news about Annie Power’s injury was the deepest cut, for sure. Min will be fine, Faugheen, touch wood, will be fine, but Annie Power is a tough one.
You could argue she has provided two of the most memorable days in Cheltenham history – one for all the right reasons and one for all the wrong ones! But it will be weird without her this year because there has been so much buzz about her over the past three seasons.
Would she have won if she ran in the Champion in 2014…falling at the last in the mares in 2015…and then that extraordinary day last March. So that’s a very hard one to take and while it would be great if she was back for Punchestown, we’ll just have to see.

We talked about retiring her last year after the season was over but we have no preconceived notions, we’ll just play it by ear.

So that was Annie down but we still had a big weekend to look forward to, or so we thought.
The Frank Ward Solicitors Irish Arkle at Leopardstown on Sunday would have been the ideal prep race for Cheltenham for Min so that was the most disappointing thing about his little knock. I don’t know if we can fit another run in for him between now and Cheltenham – but it would be nice to go there with three chase runs rather than just the two.
It was a silly thing, a nothing injury really, and these things happen all the time. He starts riding back out this week and he’ll be absolutely fine. And if he doesn’t get a run, there’s no better man to have him primed for Cheltenham than Willie Mullins.
That was Friday, so when I saw Willie’s name pop up on my phone on Saturday morning I thought it was to talk about Min but instead it was to tell me that Faugheen wasn’t right and wouldn’t run in the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle.
That was a right shock because we hadn’t seen him race in a year and he had been working so well, much like Annie Power. And with all that anticipation and excitement – finally – we were going to see him on the track, but then it turns into immense frustration.
This doesn’t appear to be a serious thing but with him you can’t chance it, with him it’s all about Cheltenham.
Injuries and setbacks are all part of the game but it doesn’t make the hurt any less, and it doesn’t make the frustration any less. It doesn’t make it any cheaper either because this is an expensive game to be in. Training fees have to be paid, staff have to be employed, and we’re in the entertainment business as well, so people have to be entertained.
But my philosophy in business is that it’s always about the next trade. If you lose money on a trade, look to the next trade and that’s the way it has to be in the racing game too or you’ll pull your hair out. Or what’s left of it anyway.

There wasn’t much respite at Doncaster on Saturday afternoon when Vroum Vroum Mag won despite not being herself. She was so brave to stick her head down and win, but it clearly wasn’t her true running and we have her back home now where she’ll be tested to see what’s at her.
This time of the year it’s easy to pick up the occasional bug, especially if you’re travelling, and there are no bigger issues at play with her, no leg issues or anything to worry about. She’ll be absolutely fine for Cheltenham, but it’s too early to say what race she’ll head to.
I’ve always thought the Mares Hurdle trip of 2m4f is her trip, but she has gotten 3m too, so you’d have to see how the Stayers race shapes up.
She’ll be entered all over the place and it’ll be the week before Cheltenham, I’d imagine, before we decide exactly where she’ll head.

It wasn’t all bad news. Let’s Dance won the Grade 2 and she was brilliant. That is her trip I think, 2m4f, but she has a few options at Cheltenham.
I think the Mares Novice Race over 2m is probably a bit short, so it looks the Neptune or the Albert Bartlett to me, though as we know the 3m can be a pretty attritional race. She was very good on Sunday and continues to improve, she’s rated 147 now and has booked her trip to Cheltenham, we just got to find the race for her now.
That’s a lofty rating, especially when you throw in the mares allowance, and if the ratings are to be believed, she’ll be bang there.
And then Royal Caviar in the Irish Arkle! Well, what can you say? That horse has been snake-bit! He has finished second so many times. They always told me chasing was going to be his game but he’s nine-years-old now and isn’t the youngest of things.
So he comes there at the last, just has to pop it to win, all his Christmases have come at once and what does he do?
Ploughs into the fence and goes right through it. But you know what, it was a very symmetrical end to the week, an appropriate end to it!
There’s a fun element to racehorse ownership, of course there is, I’m hardly in it for the money and I love it so much.
But with all of the various things that have happened over the past three or four years – the highs and the lows, the victories and the injuries – I don’t mind admitting: it is hard to enjoy it all, all of the time.
That being said, you have to try and force yourself to because we’re very lucky to have all this fantastic horses.
And if they all get there, it should be some festival. We always thought that if we got them all there in one piece, we could have some hell of a run.

MRFIXIT why was my post taking down when i was just replying to johnbs question from last night,

Didn’t like the tone of it.
Johnb has his opinions and they’re strong ones and we need that when he’s leading the thread.
If you don’t like don’t follow him but quit trying to bring him down.

Horses that land gamble are often hard trained for that purpose he had to run again quickly under penalty but be interesting to see how he performs if given a rest to see if his win was flash in pan

It happens time and time again, horses win well at Wolves go to kempton and run really flat. Someone might know the stats but what I’ve seen lately the form book flies straight out the window!!!

Still say John’s b is the best about for antepost tips and the guy doesn’t even include these as part of his end of season stats. Remember he put up rogue angel for the Irish national, golden horn and countless others. All huge prices, don’t see many providing us with tips like that. The guy probably doesn’t even want to put horses up everyday but feels obliged.

No one forces Johnb to put up tips and if he doesn’t fancy anything he doesn’t put one up.
The racing thread isn’t just about Johnn – loads of people contribute.
People should consider each tip then decide for themselves if it’s worth backing.

As posted earlier Rich Richi is doing a weekly blog on a Tuesday for the run up to Cheltenham where he gives his thoughts on his horses and where they are likely to go,
As from Sunday I will be posting my own every week to give my thoughts on different races

Well that’s another course ticked off.
Pot down in leg 2, quadpot down in the unlucky last.
Only single wins were paddocks lounge 6-5 and ballinvarrig 5-1. Thanks to Amy for that, as I wouldn’t have touched it myself.
One winner at Hereford, Toby lerone as he went well when fresh under rules so chances were he would do the same now hunting. which I backed at 9-2 in town with pacha due polder in, then pacha pulls out and Toby was trading at 6-1 on course.
      Boooooo
