The first day of the US Open is upon us, and there are lots of great matches on the schedule. We’ve picked two of those where we found excellent value for the betters out there. In the first one, we have an Italian playing villain against a home favourite, while in the other one, we have a possible upset. Check out our US Open day one betting tips below
Best US Open betting tips for day 1
These first-round bets at the US Open are mostly based on form. We’re taking two players who have played decent tennis in recent weeks against two who haven’t impressed lately.
Musetti 1.5 set handicap vs Opelka @ 9/10
This one might surprise a few people because Reilly Opelka has easily beaten Lorenzo Musetti the couple of times they have played before. The Italian has become a much better player since then.
Musetti doesn’t shy away from quick courts like the US Open. He just made the Wimbledon semi-final, after all. He’s generally a pretty stable player who doesn’t lose matches mentally but requires you to outplay him.
While Opelka’s serve is a major weapon, Musetti is well equipped to handle it. The American will have to play longer rallies and play them well if he hopes to win, and I don’t really see him doing well with that.
Overall, Musetti is just a better player who has played more tennis recently and is unlikely to drop more than one set. I’d argue that he’s likely to beat him in straight sets, but a tiebreak here and there could go wrong, so this one is a much safer pick.
Opelka recently played Jordan Thompson, who is a similarly skilled player as Musetti in terms of variety in his game. The Australian won 6-4 6-3. Expect something similar here.
Wang to win a set vs Sakkari @ 1/1
Maria Sakkari has an interesting reputation in tennis. She’s failed often when she was not really expected to fail, and we have a hunch that she might do so here as well. Her season has been fine until now, but this reads like a match she might struggle with.
It mostly comes down to Wang being a consistent player who has played really solid tennis. It’s not out of the question that she beats Sakkari, but we think she can win a set here.
While most of their previous matches were years ago, she always won a set against her. The odds makes this bet really valuable, considering the likelihood of its coming true.
Sakkari was stunned in the first round of last year’s US Open so this isn’t something we have never seen before.
Overall, both of our US Open picks today are very likely and depend on the recent form of all the players involved, which ultimately matters most in tennis. If you have another one, let us know in the comments.
