The battle for supremacy in a tight Group H of the 2024 European Championship qualifiers continues with a Monday night clash between Slovenia and Denmark. Both teams are tied on six points and while a closely fought encounter could be on the cards, Denmark's superior quality is expected to give them the edge.
Slovenia head into Monday’s clash off the back of a 2-0 in Finland in their previous qualifying fixture. They conceded early in the first half and struggled to find a way back into the contest, finishing with just two attempts on target.
That was the first defeat in the qualifiers for Slovenia, who began their campaign with successive wins. They are level on six points with three other teams in the group but sit fourth on the standings due to goal difference.
Slovenia will be keen to make a swift return to winning ways and channel the performances in their opening two fixtures in the qualifiers. However, those wins came against the likes of San Marino, with the defeat in Finland suggesting Matjaz Kek’s men could struggle against quality teams.
Denmark are coming off a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland last time put in the qualifiers. Jonas Wind’s effort just after the restart proved to be the difference in a tight encounter with few clear-cut chances.
It was a fine return to winning ways for Denmark, who threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 in Kazakhstan in their previous fixture. The manner of the defeat highlights a defensive problem for Kasper Hjulmand’s men as they have kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches across all competitions.
While the defeat in Kazakhstan was disappointing, Denmark have generally done some good work on their travels in recent times. Among their recent results away from home are 2-1 victories in France and Austria during last year’s UEFA Nations League.
