Romania vs Cyprus

, KO: 19:45 , National Arena
Cyprus

Romania's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup are hanging by a thread after just three qualifying games and they can ill afford another slip-up when Cyprus come calling in Group H.

When the draw was made, this looked like being one of the most open sections in UEFA qualifying with little between Austria, Romania and Bosnia in terms of quality.

But the Romanians got off to a bad start by losing 1-0 at home to Bosnia, who have raced since clear at the top of the group with three wins from three.

Austria only got underway on Saturday night but they delivered another blow to Romania's hopes with a 2-1 Vienna triumph that saw all three tips land for The Betting Desk thanks to a last-gasp consolation.

Mircea Lucescu's now need to be pretty much perfect during the rest of their qualifiers and will have to be on their guard against Cyprus.

After beating San Marino 2-0 in their opening qualifier, the Cypriots ran Bosnia close in a 2-1 defeat on the road and could end up being the kingmakers in this group.

With Romania in poor form, Akis Mantzios' men will fancy their chances of springing a shock in Bucharest.

How the bookies view it: Hosts to bounce back

Despite their poor form so far in the group, Romania are 1/4 favourites for this one with BoyleSports. Cyprus are 9/1 outsiders and the draw pays 4/1.

Head to head: Four in a woe for Cyprus

Romania have dominated this fixture, winning six of the four meetings and losing just once. They won four in a row against Cyprus, including a 4-1 Bucharest triumph just last year in the Nations League.

Players to watch: Dragus ready to roar

Denis Dragus lead the line for Romania in Vienna and should get the nod again for this one. The Trabzonspor forward is 10/11 at Bet365 for anytime scorer and the same firm have him at 20/1 to score with a header.

Pieros Sotiriou was rested for Cyrprus friendly draw with Bulgaria on Friday but should return to the starting line-up here. The Sanfrece Hiroshima striker is 9/2 to add to his 12-goal tally at international level.

Probable line-ups

Romania are still missing key defender Radu Dragusin through injury while Lucescu may freshen things up a bit after Saturday's defeat. Cyrpus had star striker Ioannis Pittas sent off in their last qualifier against Bosnia so he will sit this one out.

Romania: Moldovan, Ratiu, Popescu, Bancu, Burca, Stanciu, Sut, Man, Chiriches, Miculescu, Dragus.

Cyprus: Mall, Pileas, Shielis, Laifis, Satsias, Kyriakou, Kastanos, Artymatas,  Loizou, Kosti, Sotiriou.

Anything else catch the eye?

Romania haven't kept a clean sheet yet in this group and even lowly San Marino managed to score against them while copping a 5-1 defeat. That suggests BTTS stands a chance here at 5/4 with BoyleSports while adding on over 2.5 goals boosts the odds to 9/5.

Lucescu's side will need to play on the front foot as anything other than victory will leave their World Cup dream in tatters. That could see the corner count rack up and over 6.5 Romania corners pays 6/5 at BoyleSports while over 9.5 match corners is 23/20..

When Romania battered San Marino 5-1, four of the goals came after the break. So there could be some value in backing most goals to be in the second half here at evens with BoyleSports.
