Northern Ireland vs Germany

, KO: 19:45 , Windsor Park
Germany

Germany's salvage operation in the World Cup qualifiers is gathering pace but they face a test of nerve in Belfast against a fired-up Northern Ireland side.

Julian Nagelsmann's side got off to the worst possible start with a 2-0 loss in Slovakia and it was the first away defeat the Germans had ever suffered in World Cup qualifying.

But they responded with back-to-back wins over Northern Ireland and Luxembourg, with two bets bets landing for me on Thursday in their 4-0 victory.

Northern Ireland did them a favour on the same night by beating the Slovaks 2-0 at Windsor Park, a result that has fired the group wide open.

That has left all three teams sitting on six points after three games, with winless Luxembourg propping up the pile.

Northern Ireland gave the Germans a good game away from home and will now be confident of springing a Belfast shock if they can repeat their superb show against the Slovaks.

How the bookies view it: Germans hot favourites

Windsor Park is never an easy venue to visit but BoyleSports still make Germany 1/3 hot favourites. Northern Ireland are 8/1 outsiders and the draw pays 15/4.

Head to head: Irish sighs

Northern Ireland have a terrible record in this fixture and have failed to win any of the 13 meetings since German reunification.

The last 10 games have ended in victories for Germany, including a 2-0 win on their last visit to Belfast in 2019.

Players to watch: Out to prove his Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has made a slow start to his Liverpool career and will be looking to boost his confidence on international duty. He scored a stunning free-kick in the home win over Northern Ireland and is 21/20 at BoyleSports for another goal here.

It's hard to look past Isaac Price for a Northern Ireland goal, with the West Brom forward scoring 10 times in 25 caps. He's 15/4 to repeat the goal he scored in Germany.

Probable line-ups

Newcastle's Nick Woltemade recovered from illness in time to start for Germany against Luxembourg and should lead the line once more. Nico Schlotterbeck is a doubt after going off at half-time on Friday night.

Michael O'Neill has suffered a blow with Liverpool star Conor Bradley missing out after picking up his second yellow card of the campaign against the Slovaks.

Northern Ireland: Peacock-Farrell, Hume, McNair, Ballard, Toal, McCann, S Charles, Devenny, Galbraith, Price, Reid.

Germany: Baumann, Anton, Tah, Koch, Kimmich, Goretzka, Raum, Gnabry, Wirtz, Ademeyi, Woltemade.

Anything else catch the eye?

Northern Ireland caused Germany a few problems in that defeat last time out and won 5-3 on the corner count. So it could pay to back over 2.5 Irish corners tonight at decent 10/11 with Bet365 while over 9.5 match flag kicks is priced at 11/10.

We saw four goals in the last meeting but I've a feeling this game will be a bit more cagey. Under 3.5 strikes pays 4/6 at BoyleSports and the odds increase to 13/8 if you go for under 2.5 strikes. I'm more drawn to a German win with under 3.5 goals and that pays 13/10.

Northern Ireland will probably set up to frustrate the Germans then hit on the break. So I fancy most goals to come after the break and that pays 10/11 with BoyleSports.
