Motherwell vs Celtic

, KO: 15:00 Feb 2, 2025, Fir Park
Celtic

Celtic take a breather from their Champions League duties to make the short trip to face managerless Motherwell.

The Hoops won plenty of plaudits this week for a battling display in the Champions League at Aston Villa, where they came from two goals down before eventually being edged out in a 4-2 defeat.

They were through anyway, but did themselves no harm in another ‘Battle of Britain' encounter and it's back to their relentless pursuit of another title in Lanarkshire on Sunday.

The Hoops have been unusually generous recently and conceded plenty of goals domestically and face something of an unknown challenge this week.

Stuart Kettlewell stunned Scottish football this week when he walked out as Motherwell boss following what he described an unacceptable fans abuse.

Given Well are in a very decent position of fifth place in the league, those fans have come under plenty of criticism as just what they expect.

In truth, Well's style of football has been a concern to their fans for some time and two defeats in a row at bottom club St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup and the league sparked concern.

Ex-Hearts boss Stevie Fraill will be in interim charge.

How the bookies view it: Hoops huge odds-on favourites

Celtic will have plenty of fans as the bedrock of a Sunday accas at 2/11 with Boylesports. A home win is 11/1 and the draw is 5/1 all with the same firm.

Recent head to heads: Celtic ease to two wins this season

Celtic have scored seven goals without reply home and away against Well this season with 4-0 and 3-0 wins.

The visitrs have won on their last visit to Fir Park and Well haven't tasted a home win in this fixture since 2013.

Players to watch: Adam good striker

Andy Halliday netted against St Johnston last week and the ex-Rangers midfielder can pop up with some important goals. He is 12/1 to net anytime with Boylesports.

After the £10 million sale of Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes, Adam Idah has been promoted as Celtic's main striker. He netted his first goals since November with a double at Villa Park in midweek and the Ireland international is evens to score anytime with Boylesports and that looks decent value.

Predicted line-ups:

Motherwell are missing star midfielder Lennon Miller as well as keeper Archie Mair.
Callum Slattery and Moses Ebiye could return after missing last week through illness.

Celtic could be missing key defender Cameron Carter-Vickers and winger James Forrest. Jota could make a second debut after rejoining this week.

Motherwell: Balcombe, Kaleta, Gordon, Blaney, Wilson, Halliday, Sparrow, Paton, Nicholson, Maswanhise, Watt.

Celtic: Schmeichel, Johnston, Scales, Trusty, Taylor, McGregor, Bernardo, Hatate, Kuhn, Idah, Maeda.

Anything else catch the eye?

It's hard to work out how this week's events will impact on Well, but they can at least score against a Celtic defence who have looked leaky recently. Celtic have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last three league games.

Well are better at home and are on a decent four-match unbeaten home win against Rangers, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Kilmarnock. Back Celtic to win and both teams to score at 8/5 with Boylesports.

With Jota back, Celtic really should get into plenty of decent scoring positions. Back an away win and over 3.5 goals at 5/4 with Boylesports.
