The Netherlands will hope to make it consecutive wins in Group G of the European World Cup qualifiers when they travel to Victoria Stadium for a clash against minnows Gibraltar. The hosts are likely to be the whipping boys of the group and should be no match for the Dutch team.
The Dutch claimed a 2-0 victory against Latvia in their previous outing in the group. They were untroubled throughout the encounter with goals in each half from Steven Berghuis and Luuk De Jong earning them the comfortable win.
It was a good way to bounce back after their opening day defeat but Frank De Boer’s men are now playing catch-up to Turkey and Montenegro. They are still considered one of the form teams in Europe with three wins in their last four matches.
Netherlands also have a good record on the road with the opening day loss in Turkey their first defeat in eight away matches. They have beaten Germany 4-2 in that run while they also claimed a 2-1 victory in Poland.
Gibraltar are coming off a 4-1 defeat against Montenegro in their last qualifying fixture. Reece Styche scored off the their only attempt on target as they struggled to cope with the superior quality of Montenegro.
It was the second straight defeat for Gibraltar, who also opened their campaign with a 3-0 home defeat to Norway. They are firmly rooted to the bottom of the group after scoring just once and conceding seven goals in two matches.
Julio Ribas' men have also struggled at home with just one win in 11 matches. They have been on the receiving end of some heavy losses in that run, including a 6-1 defeat to Switzerland while also falling 6-0 to Denmark.
How the bookies view it
The Netherlands are overwhelming favourites among the bookies and are priced at 1/100 by bet365 to secure the win. Gibraltar are outsiders at a massive 500/1 with betfair while a draw is set at odds of 35/1 by the same firm.
Given Gibraltar’s poor form, even at home, I am backing the Netherlands to earn a comfortable away victory.
Head to Head
This will be the first ever meeting between Gibraltar and Netherlands.
Players to watch
Memphis Depay remains the biggest attacking threat for Netherlands and the forward could be worth a punt to score two or more goals at evens with bet365. Luuk De Jong is also one to keep an eye on following his goal last time out with Vbet offering 15/4 on the striker to score the first goal.
Forward Reece Styche was on target for Gibraltar last time out and is priced at 14/1 by bet365 in the anytime goalscorer market.
Anything else catch the eye?
With the bookies offering minimal odds for a Netherlands victory a flutter in the handicap market could offer some value. A -2 first half handicap is priced at 8/5 by William Hill while they could also be backed to be leading after 15 minutes at 11/8 with William Hill.
