Flamengo vs Chelsea

, KO: 19:00 , Lincoln Financial Field
Chelsea

Flamengo and Chelsea square off at the Club World Cup on Friday night with the opportunity to move to the brink of qualification for the last 16.

Both teams head to the Lincoln Financial Field in Philaldelphia having posted 2-0 victories in their opening Group D fixtures.

Chelsea got off to the perfect start by seeing off MLS side Los Angeles FC, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez getting on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo netted in either half as Flamengo overcame Esperance de Tunis.

How the bookies see it: Chelsea priced too low?

Chelsea may be a Premier League giant and the Conference League trophy holders, but they have been priced at 3/4 by BoyleSports.

On the back of an exhausting season and Enzo Maresca potentially rotating his starting lineup, punters may turn their nose up at those betting odds.

The draw at 13/5 and a Flamengo win at 3/1 look far more attractive, particularly when you consider that Flamengo sit at the top of the Brasileiro table with a game in hand.

Head to head: First-ever competitive meeting

As you would expect, these two teams have never squared off in a competitive fixture.

When Chelsea competed in the 2021 Club World Cup, they would face Palmeiras in the final, eventually prevailing by a 2-1 scoreline after extra time.

In the 2012 edition, however, they succumbed 1-0 to Corinthians in the final, highlighting how competitive games against Brazilian opposition have been in the past.

Meanwhile, Flamengo lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the 2019 final in their only ever competitive game against English opposition.

Players to watch: Delap to take centre stage?

Having been handed his Chelsea debut as a 64th-minute substitute against LAFC, the expectation is that Liam Delap will start ahead of Nicolas Jackson on Friday.

The £30m man's cross for Fernandez's goal and the manner in which he overpowered the LAFC defence caught the eye, but he faces a different test entirely trying to intimidate a defence that has conceded just four times in 11 Brazilian top-flight fixtures during 2025.

In attack, Flamengo forward De Arrascaeta is enjoying an incredible domestic campaign, contributing nine goals and four assists from just nine appearances.

A total of four goals have come from his last six outings in all competitions, one of those strikes being netted for Uruguay in a recent World Cup qualifier versus Venezuela.

Predicted lineups: Maresca to rest and rotate?

Maresca has openly acknowledged that he will rotate his squad during the group stages and that could lead to changes all over the pitch.

Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Enzo Fernandez, Christopher Nkunku and Delap are all in contention to start.

Moises Caicedo may drop down to the substitutes' bench after seemingly picking up a knock versus LAFC.

Having made his debut on the back of his transfer from Arsenal, Jorginho will be assessed with the last game being the Italy international's first notable outing in two months.

Barring any other issues, the rest of the Flamengo XI could stay the same with Pedro leading the line.

Flamengo: Rossi; Varela, Ortiz, Pereira, Lucas; Pulgar, Jorginho; Gerson, De Arrascaeta, Araujo; Pedro

Chelsea: Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Badiashile, Cucurella; Lavia, Fernandez; Nkunku, Palmer, Madueke; Delap

Anything else catch the eye?

In their last 10 matches in all competitions, Chelsea have conceded just six goals and only shipped more than once on one occasion, a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, Flamengo's record of conceding just four goals in 11 Brasileiro games is the obvious standout statistic ahead of this contest.

Chelsea have netted more than once on just two occasions in their last six games, albeit achieving that feat in their most recent games versus Real Betis and LAFC.

Enzo Fernandez has scored three times in his last six outings, and is likely to return to the starting lineup having only been selected as a substitute last time out.
