Boca Juniors vs Benfica

, KO: 23:00 , Hard Rock Stadium
Benfica

The expanded FIFA Club World Cup has plenty of critics but you can't deny it has thrown up plenty of fascinating fixtures, including this tasty Group C opener between Boca Juniors and Benfica.

Both teams have illustrious histories, conjuring memories of Eusebio and Diego Maradona in their pomp, but they have been shoehorned into this tournament based on four-year rankings in their continental club competitions.

It will still be fascinating to watch them lock horns though and this opening fixture could be pivotal to which side qualifies for the knockout stage, with Bayern Munich heavy favourites to top the group.

Benfica head to America on a downer after being pipped to the Portuguese title by Sporting Lisbon but avoided ending the season empty-handed by lifting the League Cup.

The Eagles bowed out of the Champions League in the last 16 so will be looking to make a bigger impact in the Club World Cup, although it won't be easy against a fired-up Boca Juniors side.

Boca have underachieved domestically of late, finishing seventh and sixth in the last two seasons, but are faring better in the current campaign. They finished second in their Torneo Apertura section before bowing out in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 loss to Independiente.

That wasn't enough to save boss Fernando Gago from the sack though and Miguel Angel Russo is now back at the helm for a third spell in charge.

How the bookies view it: Eagles off to a flier

European sides will be heavy favourites for pretty much every game they play against opponents from another continent and that's the case here. Benfica are just 8/11 at BoyleSports while Boca are 16/5 outsiders and the draw pays 13/5.

Head to head: First footing

These sides have never played a competitive game before and this is Benfica's first appearance at a Club World Cup. Boca did take part in the tournament back in 2007 and beat Tunisian side Etoile Sportive du Sahel before losing 4-2 to AC Milan in the final.

Players to watch: Vangelis on song

Vangelis Pavlidis caught the eye for Benfica in the UEFA Champions League, netting seven times in 12 outings. He will be a handful for the Boca defence and the powerful striker looks worth a punt for anytime scorer at 21/20 with Bet365.

Miguel Merentiel netted 14 times for Boca Junior last term and is on six for the current campaign so he should be their greatest goal threat in this tournament. The Uruguayan is 3/1 for anytime scorer at Bet365 which looks a bit overpriced.

Probable line-ups

Keeper Sergio Romero and stopper Marco Pellegrino are injured for Boca while defender Ayrton Costa controversially misses out after being denied a US visa. It will be interesting to see if former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo starts after being linked with a move to Inter Miami amid a contract dispute.

Benfica have more injury issues, with Zeki Amdouni, Manu and Alexander Bah missing out.

Boca Juniors: Marchesin, Blondel, Battaglia, Rojo, Blanco, Belmonte, Delgago, Zenon, Merentiel, Cavani, Palacios.

Benfica: Trubin, Dahl, Otamendi, A Silva, Aursens, Barrerio, Florentino, Kokcu, Akturkoglu, Schjelderup, Pavlidis.

Anything else catch the eye?

Changing managers just before a tournament is hardly ideal preparation, even though Russo knows all about Boca from his first two spells at the helm. Benfica are much more stable so they should get off to a winning start and combining a win for the Eagles with over 1.5 goals pays 23/20 at BoyleSports.

South American sides are known for being physical so it could also pay to back some Boca Juniors players to go into the book. Veteran stopper Rodrigo Battaglia has collected four yellows in his last six outings and appeals at 8/5 with Bet365 to be carded.
