IT'S here at last – the start of the new league season.
Getting us under way on Friday night is Reading v Derby so not exactly an easy one to call but Rams boss Frank Lampard will be looking to make a winning start as boss.
I'll post a separate preview and some thoughts on English Championship anteposts.
There are other games to look at of course and while my focus is on the weekend matches I'm going with a Friday double of Derby draw no bet and both to score at Waasland-Beveren v Standard Liege with the last three meetings producing 12 strikes.
Greg will post his favourite French Ligue 2 tips and watch out for comments from all the regulars as we get set for a big weekend.
On Thursday night my both to score treble landed at 9-2 but the Top Treble was a loser and there wasn't the expected goal glut at Asteras v Hibs although well done to Neil Lennon's side for progressing after a 1-1 draw in Greece.

Derby -1 h/c @ 7/2 with betfair.
We’ve added some quality in the attacking midfield area and we’ve also took a season long loan from Chelsea’s Mason Mount. He’s a youngster but he’s bagged 3 goals in 3 preseason games. No doubt Chelsea’s former academy head coach – who is now Lampard assistant played a part in that deal.
In preseason, apart from a blip loss away to Mansfield ( yes I know, its only a friendly ), but 2nd half and many Derby changes we were terrible. But since that match we’ve gone on to beat Wolves 2-1 and Southampton 3 nil.
I’m a little sceptical about taking a manager with no experience, but having the most prolific scoring midfielder in England as your new man at the helm tells you something about how he will want Derby playing. In 15 years, he’s worked under some of the best managers in the business and I think particularly in who we’ve let go and who we’ve brought in suggests Lampard wants a team bristling with attacking options from our midfield.
Although the Vydra situation isn’t over yet, he’s not going to Leeds for £11 mill. Vydra wants top flight footie and having seen him take the golden boot last season, I think he’s worth £16-£18 mill. Its not biase, its about getting the right price for him. Derby have to balance the books. We’ve seen Pearce, Shackell an another leave, but Bryson is still in the team and giving the manager one hell of a headache – his season long loan spell at Cardiff who nearly brought him for £3 mill fell through, but the game time he got was invaluable. He looks like he’s up to speed with the quality that saw him grab 17 goals – how long back was that? Chris Martin is still in a Derby shirt, I’m 50/50 on if he’ll leave or if the gaffer will give him a shout. Nugent up front seems to be the gaffers choice, but i’d rather have Chris Martin at 90% match sharp than a David Nugent at 100%.
Nick Blackman, Ikechi Anya and Jacob Butterfield look like surplus to requirements, so Maybe we can cut our wage bill by either offloading them on loan or taking a hit on what we paid for them. Maybe then we can keep the likes of Bryson/Martin and Vydra. I’d love the 3 of them hitting a rich vein of form from the off.
What Lampard seems to have is a nice balance of experience and youth and it seems to be showing dividends in pre-season. The spine of the squad is where the experience is, Carson between the sticks, Keogh/Davies just in front, holding midfielder Joe Ledley, Brsyon possibly providing the attacking midfield component and Nugent up front.
We have Olsson and Forsyth both still out injured ( left/backs ) , Martin is shaking off a niggling injury and Vydra has had no preseason matches under his belt because a minor groin injury. Lampard seems to have his hand slightly forced due to Vydra not being available, but I wonder if also he’s keeping his options open and the door by retaining Bryson just in case we are forced to sell Vydra. I hope to god if we do have to sell him, we don’t sell to another championship team. That for me is worst case scenario. We’ve also raided Peterborough for their young top goalscorer. Maybe he’s one for the future but we have lots and lots of young fresh hungry options both out wide, up front and on the bench.
Meanwhile @ Reading: Their gaffer Paul Clements, Derby had him to open our season I think 2 seasons back. It was his first managerial job with his CV bristling with experience as an assistant at Porto I think and under Jose Mourhino at Chelsea. I think 5 draws in his opening 5 games for the rams and his negative football + shutting the door in the face of Chris Martin, it was only ever going to end badly for him. He was shown the door whilst his nametag on his parking space was still wet. His replacement Nigel Pearson wasn’t much better. We had a wretched campaign and duly pounced on Gary Rowetts surprise sacking at Birmingham – and cue Birminghams ” we want a big name to drive our team into the future “. Gianfranco Zola they picked. 17 matches without a win dropping from joint 6th on goal difference to the relegation trapdoor gave my entire family 6 months worth of ammo to throw in the face of my Bluenose step-dad. Thanks Gianfranco.
Clements has had a tough time in management and i’m thinking after his awful stint at Swansea, he’d of learned his lesson and stuck to assistant roles with seasoned managers, but no, he’s bluffed his way into the hot seat of a team that finished 20th last season in the 2nd flight. Reading have not added anything substantial. I think they’re pinning their hopes of nailing down their goalmouth with 2 experienced central defenders, and that’s about it. On paper they’re in a worse state than they were last year and Reading struggling for quality even before the first ball is kicked in 15 hrs time.
They’ve only won twice at home against sides that finished the season in the top half last season and I think in 60% or so of their home games, they have conceded at least 2 goals. Derby are unbeaten in 6 visits to Reading and we tend to play better against them away, than at home. Last year it ended 3-3.
2 very very different quality sides here. The 6/5 – 5/4 on offer with most bookies is a gift to kickstart hopefully a very lucrative season of betting for this site.
But i’m going for this one with purpose. I’ve taken 7/2 with betfair to cover a -1 straight h/c. If you’re not so confident, take a half stake on the Derby win, and the other half on a -1 Asian h/c.
Vydra and probably Martin will not play because they’re not fit, but Mason Mount and Tom Lawrence could be on the scoresheet.
Best of luck guys.
Clement spent a considerable amount of time at Bayern as well before taking steps into management, that’s maybe who you were thinking of.
Best of luck to your lads, really think this could be your year this time around
I would like to start off by saying first off all i love everyone on here and it is my guilty pleasure but @nathanufton personal previews for DERBY are immense, the guy is clearly a loyal fan and his input is crucial to any bets, when i read his write ups all i see is honesty and passion. i have been here a long time but i am GUILTY of not commenting recently as i have had a shit lot of issues, I READ EVERY DAY even if not betting, nathan and @gregbrowning and @jordan and @hullshaker and @watohave made me so much
i dont think these guys and alex and others get enough credit, this is the BEST forum for gambling and bets and advise going that i know off. Before league 1 and league 2 kicks off i would like to say a big thank you to paul, greg, jordan, hull, alex, wato, @kelly-d everyone etc for making this my guilty community pleasure!
*health is your wealth*

Cheers, agree totally about nathan so pleased for him Derby won.
I appreciate your kind words. I know a few members got a bit of a hump about my ” war and peace ” summaries but anyone who knows their own team will see patterns emerge and anyone can tip something without adding reason to it. I know there are people on here who consistently put up solid tips with little background info, that’s their choice. My personal preference is to read up on why people have put up such tips. It makes for more reading for the guy who wants to put a bet down but the few extra minutes of time reading is really about absorbing the background work that’s already been done for you. That has to be a good thing. Its a conscience thing for me, if I put up a duff tip, I feel defeated, but the strength of this site is the fact we have thousands of members, we all have our own preference on who we support, what leagues and sports are our ” go to’s ” and if members have the time to type up an A4 sized summary on their own team, then that’s extra info that could be the difference between finding a winner and not. The bookies rely on betting patterns/stats and form. Most of these analysts that make up these odds are doing so because they’re following the majority – patterns. Our strength to sock it to the bookies is our personal knowledge of our own teams. How much better would this site be if we had 40 or 50 summaries on the main teams/matches with an opinion from the home team supporter and one from the away team. The comparison between those two reports would no doubt unlock tips worth their weight in gold.
My focus tonight is on the Bundesliga 2, with the opener being Hamburg vs Holstein Kiel.
HAMBURG VS HOLSTEIN KIEL:
This should be a very interesting match, as we have a Hamburg sitting in the second tier of German football for the first time in their club history, against Holstein Kiel, who just missed out on promotion to the top flight last season.
Hamburg are historically one of the bigger clubs in Germany, but over the course of the last four years have changed managers consistently, and just managed to stay in the top flight through relegation playoffs. So this slide has been coming for a while. In response to their first ever relegation though, they have lost a few players, but have strengthened their squad considerably with a number of shrewd signings and are already being touted as one of the sides most likely to be promoted.
Holstein Kiel are an old club themselves, but have hovered between the Regionalliga (4th tier) and 3.Liga for a number of years now. They only got promotion to Bundesliga.2 a season ago, and immediately looked to make a strong case to get themselves to the top flight, missing out by the barest of margins. The problem though for the Storks is that they’ve lost a large number of first team players in the transfer window, and those they’ve brought in are not exactly at the same level.
In terms of transfers, the two clubs have done the opposite, with HSV strengthening, whilst Holstein are weakened. In pre-season, HSV won all 4 games against decent clubs, whilst Holstein were battered in both their games.
I’m expecting a strong response from HSV as they want to stamp their authority on their maiden voyage in Bundesliga 2, with a solid home win.

FT CS 1-2 @ 9.00 ??
The last five meetings between these sides have produced 21 goals at 4.2 per game , last three – overs , last four – over 1.5 & btts after the break
Also 17 goals in the last 3 meetings if memory serves me right. Although at this very early stage of the game i’d take a narrow low scoring win, I really can see Derby come flying out of the blocks. We’ve showed in preseason the hunger in the side right up until the final whistle. The Mansfield result was a kicker but our own fault, but everything before and after has been pretty how you would want it. As the friendlies have been chalked off, the quality of the opposition has improved and to get a good preseason under our belt with competition for places in key areas, nobody is going to want to put in a bad shift.
Last season we had a miserable start to the season and we never really started to get going until late September/October, but by then Wolves were already pretty much out of sight. Although I wasn’t the happiest of bunnies over our well documented February/March slide, last season’s end wasn’t as bad as usual, we just had way too many draws that could easily of been wins.
FYI Lawrence on the left wing has upped his tempo and playing in a much more confident attacking role. He got 2 against Southampton. On the other flank, I forget his name but we’ve a youngster new to the side that looks like he can run at defenders and cut inside. Hopefully he’ll give us that bit we’ve missed since Johnny Russell headed of to the USA.
This match is possibly a bit of a grudge match for Paul Clements, i’m sure he’d like to do one on his former employers, but since they seem to of taken a step back in the squad regeneration phase, I can see Reading scurrying back to the bus come 90 minutes with their tails between their legs.
Cheers for your thoughts – I don’t see Derby losing but would like to see them in action before putting money on them to win.

South Melbourne to score both halves and Bentleigh Greens O2.5tgs double @ 8.62/1
Green Gully have been in poor home form recently which South Melbourne have been fairly strong away. Although not prolific scorers away from home, I’m taking a chance that they can bag on either side of half time.
Bentleigh are clearly are better side than Kingston and have bagged more than 3 in recent H2H at least a couple of times, and in several away fixtures this season.
Good luck

SUDET VS. LAPPEE:
Top vs. bottom here in the Kaakkois-Suomen regional division of the Kolmonen and with the previous May H2H ending 0-6 to Sudet, I’m hoping Lappee can make us happy (jesus wept) by conceding a few more away from home.
They’ve conceded 5 or more in 6 of the last 11, all of which against sides who are certainly no stronger than the hosts who, themselves, hit 10 past a side just 4 weeks ago who Lappee drew 3-3 with.

Afternoon gents
Ware into the second round of fixtures in French Ligue 2 and as we thought, its always a slow burner.with just the 15 goals last Friday night
Lat week Nancy were embarressed 2-0 at home to New boys Beziers and my advice would be to stay well clear of the WDW markets for at least another few weeks.
I’ll be focusing on goals as usual
Sochaux v Valenciennes
One team who didnt waste any time in setting down a marker was Valenciennes who ran out 3-1 winners against a very decent Auxerre side. Valenciennes have seen over 2.5 goals in 13 of their last 17 league matches away from home which is good going. Sochaux are no strangers to goals haveing seen 17 of their last 24 at home go over 2.5 goals and with 4 of the last 5 matchs between these two seeing over 2.5 and both teams scoring its worth going for more goals here again tonight – especially after the start the visitiros had, cant see Sochaux keeping a clean sheet.

15 goals last week and the fact you are being offeered 15/8 for 21+ goals in the 8 games shows how few goals the bookies are epecting (they arent offering low on this)

Derby team news up:
Starting 11 with few surprises.
Carson
Wisdom/Keogh/Davies/Lowe
Ledley
Bryson/Mount
Lawrence/Nugent/Wilson
It’s essentially a 4-3-3 and Lampard wants the ” Derby style ” of football to return… Quick passing, good creativity and linkage from midfield and wingers injected with Red Bull for 90 minutes.
Max Lowe in left back is no surprise, he’s third choice because Olsson and Forsyth are out, but Lowe has had a good pre season and even though he’s an academy product, his progression as a player seems to of come of age and he’s ready.
The other 3 defenders are no-brainers. Ledley as holding midfielder = no brainer. No surprise to me but Bryson back in midfield. How we have missed Bryson in midfield with his late appearances into the box, the idiot who sent him on loan last season to Cardiff should of been taken outside and shot… twice. When Warnock got him on loan for the season, he must of thought all his Christmas’s had come all at once, he’s admired him for a while. He got plenty of games with them but his absence was never filled by Derby – thus, our attacking potential and goal tally was hindered. Without Vydra’s goals, we’d of been stuffed. Chelsea loanee joins Bryson in the middle to make up the three midfielders but Ledley has to win those big battles and dominate. Bryson is a box to box midfielder though and his pre season reminds us of what he will do on the pitch.
Lawrence on the left wing, Nugent as point man and Harry Wilson on the right. With four potential creative threats, Nugent needs to earn his stripes. I think Derby have better strikers and at 33, he’s going to have to do something special week in week out to keep his spot.
If Carlsberg did Derby county line-ups, Vydra would be fit and left to run riot as point man. The silver lining is that besides Leeds losing out to Vydra’s £40k a week wage demands, he’s still a Derby player. £11 mill for last seasons top scorer is insulting, but if this starting 11 pays dividends, who does Lampard drop??
The feelgood factor amongst Derby fans is sky high. We’ve won 2 and drawn 4 of our last 6 away to Reading ( 3-3 last year same fixture ). Reading tend to slap us down though when they come to Derby. We’ve sold more season tickets than last year and its part due to the unknown factor of the quick signing of Lampard and the fact that the fans sense we’re about to return back to the free-flowing attack after attack football that seems a distant memory.
Somehow I’ve stayed awake since 3am, thankyou Red Bull. In case you missed it, I’ve taken Derby win -1 straight h/c @ 7/2 with betfair.
If you want a little safety, split your stake and take around 6/5 – 5/4 for the Derby win and drop the other half on a -1 Asian h/c. That pays around 5/4 – 11/8. A 1 goal win for the rams will see a small profit, a 2 goal margin will see a healthy profit.
Likely goalscorers would be Mason Mount, Nugent and Lawrence. I’m going to hold back on conclusively tipping on goalscorer markets until I see some action first. FYI: Mason Mount trained with the England team prior to the world cup and he IS on Gareth Southgate’s radar.
Good luck tonight guys, lets get the domestic season off to a flier and set the tone for the next 10.5 months.
Alright nathan , love your write ups an good luck for the season ahead but from the outside looking in I think Keogh is not good enough at centre half for a team with thoughts of promotion. I’ve watched the rams plenty of times on tv an always felt he was a weak link.
I agree, been saying it for 4 seasons now about Keogh. He seems to have good games and then he’ll make a howler that costs us a win. When we re-signed Shackell, I thought finally he’ll fall down the pecking order. Shackell never got fit from when he rejoined us and has been released. Can’t help but feel we should of rode out his injury and let him get game time, but the accountants balancing the books had to get rid, so no space in a side that needs to cut the wage bill.
Glad I resisted the temptation to add Derby in any season bets, they don’t look any better than a mid table team on that first half performance.
I saw the first half and Reading never let us play. We gave balls away for 45 mins, Reading had chances in the first half to put the game to bed come half time. We grew in the game over the 2nd half, yes we conceded first but clawed our way back with a Mason Mount and late late winner from Tom Lawrence. The 2nd half stats were turned around by Derby and even though I couldn’t be confident in who will be on the scoresheet, I did point towards Nugent and the 2 goalscorers as the likely culprits.
My bet was 1 goal shy of landing but the split stake bet I advised would of seen a small profit from the first part and a returned stake for the Asian h/c bet.
Obviously, i’m glad we’ve made a winning start instead of a draw, so that’s good for Lampard and now we’re playing games that actually matter, any game that any team wins in injurytime could in theory look back at that particular game and say ” that’s the game that kept us up/put us in the top 6/got us promoted. Last year there were way too many games where I was saying the opposite. It’s as important for me to deliver solid tips to the site as it is to see my team win. I’m sure it’s the same for most members.
Didn’t see the Rublev match.
Rublev and Konta to win @ 2.43- 6 units.
For once it would be nice to have the early bets as winners. Oh well primetime now.

Nice one WD
Nice late goal for your lads Nathan and well done all winners!
Night Owl:
CERRO PORTEÑO VS. SOL DE AMÉRICA (0000 KO):
Early days in the Paraguayan Clausara but both teams have scored in all 3 of their openers and it’s always been a good historical H2H for me whenever I’ve picked it for the site so hope that continues.
10 of the last 13 successive match-ups have seen 3 or more and although this hasn’t been as consistent as it was a couple of years back, it’s still a pretty good record.

??????? Scottish Football Returns ???????
It’s been a short summer with the World Cup, Betfred cup and euro qualifiers keeping us punters occupied and I can’t quite believe the new season is upon us tomorrow
Having looked through the full Scottish card league 1 looks like a lottery with the shortest price team 13/10 – I’ve picked out 2 bets for tomorrow and have thoughts on a couple of the Division 2 matches
Hamilton v Hearts KO 3pm
Every season when predictions are out on who will finish bottom , Hamilton are usually everyone’s pick ( including mine ) but every year they prove the doubters wrong. They have lost a lot of key players during the summer though and I can’t see it being anything other than a long hard slog. Craig Levein has made no fewer than 14 signings this season at Hearts they look stronger than last season.
Hamilton have laid a new pitch so hopefully the advantage they usually hold over teams by playing on plastic won’t be evident here.
Taking the Jambo’s to edge this and get their new season off to a winner. They have better players and a better squad than a Hamilton team who will struggle this season
Back Hearts to WIN 47/50 (MarathonBet) (NAP)

League 2 Previw
Annan v Elgin
It was a miserable Betfred cup for Gavin Price and his Elgin team. They lost all 4 games without scoring and face a long treck down to Galabank. Elgin’s away form last season was brutal and the worst in the league and it’s not surprising with the amount of traveling they do.
Annan are a tough team to beat at home and they were unbeaten in their two home Betfred cup games against Hamilton and and Stranraer and I’m taking them to continue Elgin’s early season woes
Clyde v Cowdenbeath
One thing that has really surprised me is Clyde managing to retain the services of David Goodwillie – the striker could without doubt be playing at a higher level and having scored 25 goals last season they have done well to keep him. Danny Lennon has also brought in experienced journeyman John Rankin who’ll be a good addition at this level – they competed well against better opposition in the league cup and should go well this season
Cowdenbeath kept their senior league status by the skin of their teeth last season and it will be another tough season ahead for them
Annan Double Chance
Clyde to WIN
Double pays 5/4 (Bet365)
Anyone who stayed up to watch that Paraguayan game will share my pain 2-0…penalty missed, a disallowed goal, 9 yellows, 2 reds and 25 shots from just the hosts.
Needed it to complete a sizeable acca too. Well and truly p*ssed off ?
