Unfortunately, I Am Rocco ran another good race in defeat, but bumped into another well-handicapped horse.
I did think the race was between I Am Rocco and the Donald McCain horse, but did give a mention to the eventual winner.
David Apprahamian does very well with his chasers, and his horse improved plenty from his chasing debut. The money was down, and Gavin Sheehan had a steering job on the winner.
Chaos Control was the earlier of the two selections. He looked to be going okay until turning for home, and when he came under pressure, it was game over.
Western Fold 11/8 (1pt) – Punchestown 4.05
Considering the Jumps season has only jumped properly started, this is a great week for a midweek card at Punchestown.
Croke Park is a two-time Grade 1 winner, and though he doesn't win in easy fashion, he is a very tenacious horse who has plenty of ability.
I wouldn't read too much into the fact that Jack Kennedy is on Croke Park, and I have tipped up Western Fold. Danny Gilligan has been riding this horse for the vast majority of his runs, so he was always going to be in the saddle.
The horse to beat if turning up in good form on his return is definitely Heart Wood. Henry De Bromhead's horse was second in the RyanAir Chase at Cheltenham and has the best form.
However, Western Fold looks like a real improver this year. He won at the Galway Festival, winning the Plate and recently won a Grade 3. He has to give away 8lbs to Heart Wood, but he has race fitness and is flying at present.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Takiwatanga 10/3 (1pt) – Punchestown 5.05
John Gleeson wasn't on board last time out on Takiwatanga, but is in the saddle today. John has been Emmet Mullins' most used jockey for the bumpers in Ireland, even above his family member Patrick. Seeing him used for today's race suggests he will be ready to fire.
Emmet has a good strike rate in bumpers, and John Gleeson is very good in this sphere.
This horse has a flat pedigree, so should have plenty of speed, which is what you need for bumper,s which often turn into a sprint. He is by Magna Grecia and out of a mare who is related to a couple 100+ rated horses on the flat.
The market normally speaks volumes on Emmet's horses, so seeing him at 12/1 on debut suggests they left something to work on. He is going to be much shorter in the market this time around, as it doesn't look the strongest of Irish bumpers.
