There is plenty of racing today but not too many races where I can pick out good value bets. I do have three selections though with strong chances.
2.40pm Haydock
Although this is technically a Champion Hurdle trial I don’t think there are any that will be threatening Buveur D’air at the festival in March.
The winner though can rightly lay claim to a place in the field for the big race and I think the one that is most likely to do so is MOHAAYED. His win last time out at Ascot in a big handicap was a really impressive piece of form and when you consider his win in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last year he is clearly a classy horse.
I think he is the best horse in this field and is worth a bet at the current price.
3.00pm Ascot
The interesting horse in this race is Belami Des Pictons for Venetia Williams who has been off for over a year but could be nicely handicapped if he bounces back to his best, having finished very close to Waiting Patiently who is now rated considerably higher.
It’s too much of a risk for me to recommend a bet though at a fairly short price and I would prefer to side with SAN BENEDETO who is a nice consistent horse and has been running well in graded races over the last two seasons. This should be a bit easier for him and I think his price is far too big, particularly with Lorcan Williams taking 5lb off as a useful young jockey.
3.15pm Haydock
When you look closely there are actually quite a few at the top of the market that have question marks over them and the one that I fancy to run well is my tip for the Grand National last year CAPTAIN REDBEARD.
He enjoys it round Haydock and is fairly handicapped for a staying chase of this nature. He is versatile in terms of the ground and should go close today.
