DAY ONE of Royal Ascot is upon us and I have four selections that I am keen on to get the week off to a flyer.
Royal Ascot 2.30
In the 2.30pm I am a big fan of MUSTASHRY who is a horse with further improvement in him against horses who we may well have seen the best of. Sir Michael is a genius with these types and I expect him to win well today at a lovely price.
Royal Ascot 3.40
Another one I expect to win is BATTAASH in the hell for leather sprint at 3.40pm. I just love to see this horse run because when he is on his game he is the fastest thing on four legs. His youthful boisterousness seems to have calmed down of late and I think 2-1 is a very fair price for him to win again this year. I make him more like a 6-4 shot to be honest.
Royal Ascot 5.00
My third selection is one at a nice price who regular readers will know that I have admired for some time. That horse is TIME TO STUDY who runs in the long distance handicap at 5.00pm. This is undoubtedly a competitive handicap so we need to find one with potential improvement.
Time to Study was rated 12lb higher than his current mark at this time last year so there is certainly some juice in his handicap mark. The extreme test will suit nicely and with the switch to Ian Williams this season there is the potential that he has been targeted at this race all along.
I will also probably be having a wee saver on my old pal Snow Falcon in this race too. He doesn’t look obviously well handicapped but this test will suit and he has improved as a horse since the last time he ran on the flat, putting together some nice runs over fences.
Royal Ascot 5.35
My last selection is ADDEYBB in the final race of the day, the 5.35pm. His win in a group 2 race last season makes him the standout horse in the race for me and I think he should be shorter in the market, particularly if there is still a bit of moisture in the ground.
1520t – CAME FROM THE DARK 13/8 win
ED WALKER has helped the thread out with two 4/1 shots landing over the last couple of days, he has some Ascot entries this week but today at Thirsk he sends just 1, albeit in what looks like a competitive race. Having won on heavy 10 days ago the improving ground isn’t exactly needed but that ride looked pretty comfortable, he was given just 1 tap with the whip and did everything quite easily, we stay over 6f in class 4. If you don’t like 13/8, LUCKY LUCKY MAN is 5/6 to place top 3 appears safer as he is only 1lb above a class 2 win back in September, SHEEPSCAR LAD is 13/8 to place, he is 15lbs better off with PEN DUTCH for a 2.5l defeat over CD.
