I offered to cover Rizz this evening due to having some spare time at the airport before heading to Spain. Rizz will return as usual tomorrow for Friday’s card.
Morte Point 2/1 – Chelmsford City 7.15
My main selection for Thursday's racing comes from the evening meeting at Chelmsford City on the AW.
I didn’t think the Chelmsford card was too bad, and there were some interesting races on offer if the evening flat stuff is something you are interested in.
The horse that stood out to me as being potentially a good bet was Morte Point from the Muir & Grassick yard. Morte Point has become a progressive type for the hard in recent times, with recent form figures of 4212.
It took a while for this three-year-old to kick into gear, but his last three runs have been good, winning at Newbury in a Class 4 Handicap and following it up with a close second last time out in a Class 2 at Doncaster.
His recent second at Doncaster was a cracking effort, and given this race represents a big drop in grade from a Class 2 to a Class 4, that surely gives him a huge chance in this race, particularly if he is able to replicate that sort of form. I’m confident enough that he will be able to; he is only 1lb higher for that recent Doncaster second, and he arrives here after a short break, hopefully freshened up and ready to strike again.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Run For Mahler 6/4 – Thurles 2.12
I normally try to avoid these sorts of races, but after analysing the field, I think Run For Mahler can fall into the safe enough bet category to get the job done.
Most eyes will be on the Gordon Elliot runner Qualimita, who cost a whopping half a million euros. She was bought after hacking up by 30L on debut, but hasn’t kicked on from that performance.
Her recent form figures read 3242325F, and although it may not appear ‘shocking’, it is surprising she hasn’t more 1s on the CV given the price tag.
I did a bit of replay watching on Qualimit, and to be honest, she doesn’t look like a two-mile horse at all, and I’m not surprised to read that connections are opting to send her over the bigger obstacles at some point in the near future.
Furthermore, she hasn’t been seen since April of this year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she is in need of a run or two.
My selection, Run For Mahler, was consistent for trainer C Brynes last term and arrives here on the back of a respectable reappearance run last month, which saw her finish second on hurdles debut.
Run For Mahler was no match for the odds-on favourite in Carrigmoornaspruce, who looks a decent sort for connections going forward this term.
Run For Mahler kept on well on her hurdling debut last time out and would have finished much closer had she not blundered the last. My selection is more than entitled to come on for the recent experience and looks the one to beat in my opinion in what looks like a pretty ordinary field.
