WE HAD a nice day last Saturday with Urban Fox winning at Ascot and Optimus Prime grabbing a place in the big handicap hurdle at Haydock.
I turn to Danny Tudhope who rode Urban Fox again today for a bit of value in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury which is live on ITV Racing. I also have two great value bets at Thirsk where they have some nice big handicaps on a big day for the North Yorkshire track. As it happens all three races come within 40 minutes of each other so get your bets on and strap yourself in for the ride.
3.20pm Thirsk
LANDING LIGHT for the Rebecca Bastiman yard is one that I have had my eye on since November when he was a good 2nd in a class 3 handicap at Wolverhampton. He has slipped down the weights a bit since then but his last two runs have been a good bit better and he looks ready for a big run today. He doesn’t have a great record at Thirsk in his previous three runs at the track but I am willing to overlook that because I think excuses could be made each time and his past performance is built into his price today.
3.40pm Newbury
This is a competitive Group 1 race with a really healthy number of entries which helps to create a bit of each way value for us. The bookies have also helped with quite a few offering 4 places when they are only obliged to pay out on 3 because it isn’t a handicap.
SUEDOIS is the apple of David O’Meara’s eye and is the best horse that Danny Tudhope rides regularly. The horse owes neither of them anything having won in Ireland and the USA last year in big races. He doesn’t have too much to find in terms of form with the best of these and there are question marks over some at the top of the market like Rhodedendron (distance) Limato (distance) and Addeybb (step up in class). Suedois is consistent and has his ideal conditions with good to firm ground over a mile and he shouldn’t be 25/1 in my book. I’ve gone with a bigger stake than I normally would for a 25/1 shot because I think he is excellent value.
3.55pm Thirsk
Third and final bet of the day is WAARIF at Thirsk who is also a David O’Meara horse. Since joining the yard last year he has surprisingly failed to get his head in front. Last time out he was only 5th but I don’t think that tells the full story. He wasn’t beaten miles and was the best finisher of those riding prominently who all faded at the end perhaps because the pace was too quick for the soft ground. He has been dropped another couple of pounds in the handicap and I think his time may be coming for that elusive win.
