IT IS St Leger Day at Doncaster and the big race promises to be a good one.
The Cinderella story of Pyledriver – he went unsold at the sales as a yearling and was bought back by his owners – brings some welcome relief from the usual domination of the training powerhouses and mega rich owners. He’ll carry my support though the presence of Santiago and in particular Hukum as obvious rivals mean that he doesn’t rate as a bet for me.
I do have three other selections elsewhere on Saturday though. Have a listen to the Gambla racing podcast where we discuss those selections:
2.25pm Doncaster
The Portland Handicap promises to be a belter again with 22 runners taking to Town Moor for the cavalry charge over 5.5 furlongs. I actually have two selections for the race both of which I think will really benefit from the distance. The first is ARECIBO who I have been following for quite some time and he just struggles to get his head in front. He drops another 1lb in the weights and with this trip sure to suit he looks a great each way bet despite odds shortening yesterday afternoon. Anything around 7-1 or 15-2 is still great value with firms paying out on 6 places.
The alternative selection is MERAAS who should also be suited by 5.5 furlongs and I think still has a bit of potential improvement to come.
2.50pm Fontwell
I’m not convinced that the favourite in this race should be so short and my fancy is a horse called ARTISTIC LANGUAGE at an each way price. He showed some decent form as a three year old and will hopefully improve a bit this season. He is unexposed after some reasonable runs in maiden hurdles etc last season without winning and I think he can go very close in this handicap after a break. Make sure you get 4 places each way.
