THREE tips for me today – two of which are uncharacteristically short-priced but great value nonetheless.
I don’t have a selection in the big race of the day – the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot – but it promises to be an exciting one and if you want a bet for a bit of interest I would maybe have a look at the two Aidan O’Brien runners who are big prices and might be decent each way-value in an eight-runner race.
Ascot 3.0
This is a massive handicap with 27 runners so we’re looking for extra each-way places from the bookies and a bit of value at a bigger price.
My eye was drawn to a few in this including the favourite Flaming Spear owned by Tony Bloom who has had so much success with well-gambled jollies in big handicaps recently.
I wouldn’t put anyone off backing Flaming Spear but at the prices I’m looking for something a bit bigger. Firmament is another who looks well handicapped based on last year’s form and will win one of these big handicaps soon enough.
If you are looking for one who is likely to be in the top 5 or 6 he is a fair bet, particularly with Danny Tudhope on board. Shady McCoy outran his price last time out to finish 2nd and should be on the premises again but there isn’t as much value about him this time.
The one I am siding with is the Mark Johnston inmate CARDSHARP who is only a three year old and finished a close 4th last time out to Burnt Sugar, Shady McCoy and Spanish City in the Bunbury Cup. The handicapping and allowances are complicated here but the outcome is Cardsharp gets to run from a 4lb lower mark here.
With the super-cool James Doyle on board Cardsharp is an obvious each way bet for me and I can see him finishing close again at a nice price.
Ascot 4.15
NATE THE GREAT was only beaten by a neck in the Chesham Stakes last time out at Royal Ascot and that is by far the best form here. I make him an odds-on shot so although I don’t normally get involved with short-priced favourites the odds are appealing.
York 5.35
It’s the same story in this race with another fairly short-priced selection by my standards but QUE AMORO went straight into the notebook last time when winning nicely against Queen Jo Jo.
That opponent has won again since and Calum Rodriguez comes in for the ride today taking a really handy 3lb claim off in the process. I make Que Amoro a good bit shorter than 5-2 so she is a bet for me today.
