IT was a slightly frustrating day yesterday with William Buick getting D’Bai into a bit of a hole when he looked to be travelling really well and then Rebel Assault perhaps hitting the front a bit too early and only managing third albeit at a decent each way price.
As for old Duke of Firenze he didn’t get involved at all and it may be time to accept that my old pal has had enough for the time being. I certainly won’t be backing him again until I see evidence that he has his old spark back.
Today I have three from Goodwood and one from Galway in the feature race this evening, the Galway Plate.
3.00pm Goodwood
Followers will remember that SOLDIERS CALL got me out of jail at Royal Ascot with a brilliant win and that only strengthened my faith in this classy young sprinter. I think he will hit the front early today under Danny Tudhope and there won’t be anything who can catch him.
3.35pm Goodwood
All the talk here is about Without Parole versus Expert Eye, the two three year olds who have impressed recently and they are rightfully at the top of the market. However, I don't think the older horses can be written off and the way the track has been riding so far this week I have to have an each way bet on LORD GLITTERS who should be half the price he is. He has been really consistent and continues to improve. He is versatile with different ground and is the ideal type to come from near the back of the pack and mug the two favourites down the straight.
5.55pm Goodwood
ALJADY has been in my notebook since June when he won nicely before winning again at Thirsk and he will continue to improve as the season goes on. His three runs have all been over straight sprint trips so the bend today will be something new for a horse who has been running quite green (looking inexperienced). There is no doubt for me that he is the one in the race who has the most potential to be a Group level horse and with his breeding (dam is by Galileo) and running style he should improve again as he goes up in trip. This is obviously a very big field so don’t be afraid to take an each way price particularly if you can get 5 or 6 places each way. I’m tipping him to win but no harm in going each way to protect your stake.
7.20pm Galway
Although his form figures are a bit sketchy I am absolutely convinced that JURY DUTY has a few big race wins in him. I think he is better than handicap level (although this race is very much at the top end of the handicap game) and if he can have a safe round of jumping I think he is the classiest horse in the field and will be bang there. Don’t be surprised if there is a bit of a gamble on him this evening either. Get on early. The other one to look out for is Drumcliff for Harry Fry who won nicely at Uttoxter and has been aimed at this race for a while.
