DERBY DAY is upon us and it’s buy one get one free with both the Oaks and the Derby on the same day for the first time ever as far as I’m aware.
Have a listen to the Gambla Racing Podcast where I run through the whole ITV racing card and give my thoughts:
1.50pm Epsom
NO BET. Marginal preference would be for Twaasol but odds aren't appealing.
2.25pm Epsom
NO BET. Safe Voyage fancied to win but no juice in the price at 5-4.
3.00pm Epsom
MR SCARAMANGA. Course and distance winner who performs well at Epsom generally and 2nd time out might be a good time to catch him. Price looks very fair as he drops to a workable handicap mark.
TINANDALI. An improving 4 year old for David O'Meara who had a decent 2nd at Ayr on his seasonal debut and should improve again.
3.40pm Epsom – The Oaks
A two horse race in my book where FRANKLY DARLING can improve again following her Royal Ascot win where she was quite keen but stayed on really well to win comfortably. Stamina is no problem at all and is probably the better option at the prices given that we can’t be sure Love will stay the extra half mile.
4.15pm Epsom
An intriguing race where CLOAK OF SPIRITS has the form in the book at Group 1 level and has been overlooked in the betting where the preference seems to be for potential improve Fooraat. I would rather be with Cloak of Spirits who will surely win if she can replicate her best form.
4.55pm Epsom – The Derby
It’s a really exciting and unique renewal of the Derby this year because of the changes brought about by Covid and we have horses taking part who would never normally be involved. One of those is my selection PYLEDRIVER who won really well at Royal Ascot albeit everything fell in his favour. The form of the race is pretty solid though. There is a case to be made for the fancied horses like English King (impressive trial winner at Lingfield), Kameko (2000 Guineas winner) and Mogul (classy breeding and choice of Ryan Moore) but there isn’t a standout contender and I have a feeling that one of the outsiders will spring a surprise. We know that Pyledriver can stay the trip and also has a decent turn of foot so he is my selection but Mohican Heights is another potential option at a big each way price.
