Champagne Prince ran his usual consistent race at York, but found a couple too good for him once again.
I thought the drop in trip was going to be ideal for him, but he didn't quite finish his race as strongly as a couple of others. I think there is a race in him, but unless he's good odds again, I think it's best to avoid.
Financer was given a cold ride from the rear by David Allan. The horse was travelling nicely in behind a wall of horses, but when the gaps opened, his efforts were weak. Strange performance, given how well he went through his race.
Stumptown 7/4 (1pt) – Pardubice 2.30
This thread is 99% concentrated on UK and Irish racing, as that's what is closest to home. Every now and again, I dip my toes into French racing, as it is easy to obtain the form, and we have a lot of raiders going over the channel. This track will catch your eye as it's a Czech Republic track, and this race in particular is the Czech Grand National. Obviously, I don't know the vast majority of the runners, but Stumptown has made the trip over from Gavin Cromwell's yard, and on his day, he should win this with plenty up his sleeve.
I refuse to believe that the Czech horses are anywhere near the standard required to beat Stumptown if the Irish runner is fit enough. Stumptown won the X-Country race at the Cheltenham Festival in March and was one of the fancied runners for the Aintree Grand National, but he didn't fire that day. If the version which won at Cheltenham turns up, this should be a romp.
Gavin Cromwell is very shrewd and does extremely well when sending runners to the UK, so I doubt he'll be sending Stumptown all this way if they weren't supremely confident.
7/4 is the current odds, and I'd say that is still very generous.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Day Of Grace 3/1 (1pt) – Goodwood 5.22
I tipped up Day Of Grace last time out when she looked like a massive flop before staying on in crazy style to eventually win in taking fashion. After that, I said in my preview the day after that, they have to go up in trip, and that is what they have done.
She has gone up 6lbs in the handicap, and doesn't tackle soft ground like last time out, which makes life harder. I thought she relished the ground last time out, but she should be fine on slightly quicker, with the longer trip being massive for her.
Her pedigree suggests she can progress a lot more, being related to some very decent horses at these middle-distance trips, so I am expecting another step forward.
