We walked away with 3 placed efforts in what could have easily been a decent day with a tad more luck in running. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to put a smile on my face as I continue to overlook runners which are getting the job done at nicer prices.
Imperial Trooper was caught on the line, Light Speed might have won if not trapped on the rail well into the final furlong whilst Tailorman ran well. To see the winner return at 9/2 when only overlooked given his 9/4 opening price was about typical.
My first five days here were disastrous, it will not have helped win followers to the thread but I outlined my approach and the tide does seem to have turned so let us look back at August's results.
If following me every day to a 0.10 e/w stake (3.00) the first 8 days resulted in a loss of -19.45. The 8 since however have more than made up for it. On day nine a ‘full-house' was landed returning +76.48, and six days later another, bringing in a healthy +23.66 as all runners placed. The bet is +75.77 overall not including any one winner bonus' etc. If purely following the singles, you will be +9.05.
Roll With It 5/1 – 15.10 Worcester
With Oasis apparently getting back together, Roll With It is a clear choice, now some might say that isn't a good enough reason to be selecting him, well, stop crying your heart out, stand by me and trust the masterplan.
The horse won in June before a decent enough 3rd when seen at Market Rasen having been raised 5lbs. Off the same mark, he may find it difficult to get by the heavy enough favourite but the Bowen's very nice record at this track is what edged it for me, overlooking Ali Star Bert.
Since taking a joint license with Michael Bowen, the team have 9 winners from 19 runners with James being on for four of those. Over the previous 6 years from over 100 runners, the yard operate at over 20% with more than 67% of the runners finishing in the places.
Martinelli 6/1 five places – 17.00 Tipperary
If you didn't appreciate the reasoning above, seeing Lisandro Martínez on TV earlier and thinking it was Gabriel Martinelli surely makes this horse the play.
Back in July, the horse looks to have been involved in a really hot race, he had Mikey Hassett taking off 5lbs that day who is now aboard Finsceal Annie at a similar price. He was a distant third but the form does read quite nicely.
Next time, with Colin Keane booked, he finished 4th of 17 upped a furlong in trip, today another furlong for him at a speedsters track shouldn't be an issue, he's by Blue Point and runs off 6lbs lower.
Police Academy 5/1 three places – 14.40 Worcester
Fergal O'Brien is a top UK NH trainer, no one has won more than him at Worcester over recent years. Ben Sutton has ridden for him here 5 times over the past 24 months, never finishing outside the top 2, with two wins to his name.
The young apprentice, often seen for the Skelton's is actually having a bit of a purple patch at the moment, with 2 winners and 3 places from his previous 6 rides. He is at the track for just one ride and although last time might have been a better time to catch him, he just about is included. If you feel you've found something nicer, then by all means mix and match as today I am not overly enthused by my selections.
Furthermore, it has to be said just how little if any value this horse does offer. Those big names ahead of us in the market aren't even that much shorter so again, let the market develop and bet if everything still reads well.
Police Academy returns here just 13 days after a run over C&D, he finished 2nd and comes here 3lbs higher. Being a Novice Chase I will be hoping he is once again capable of coming through the field with a strong run to at least make the frame up against hopefully, some others with bigger targets in mind.
Crow's Nest 8/1 three places – 16.52 Brighton
Crow's Nest put his best run in for some time here a few weeks back without really ever looking a winner. A 1lb drop in the ratings isn't likely to change that, but he also drops in class and may be able to get involved as my punt of the day, he takes the place of drifting Kaleidoscope Eyes at Brighton – a horse who may be capable now under the guidance of a claimer.
George Baker sends more here than most, I am sure all of his today are worthy of a look over. Nicola Currie has one for him, a winner together here 11 days ago but Pat Cosgrave is at least his main rider and I am happy to take the chance.
There isn't a lot to present to you, it's more a case that the horse is capable of getting involved and his price represents his inclusion on a day I can't wait to be over before it has even begun.
– Advised bet – Eachway Lucky15
WHAT IS A LUCKY 15 BET?
A Lucky 15 bet consists of 15 unique bets, covering every possible combination that comes from backing four selections. The 15 bets are broken down like this:
– 1 fourfold accumulator
– 4 trebles, with each treble omitting one of your selections
– 6 doubles, again covering every possible combination
– 4 singles
The attraction of a Lucky 15 is that it offers many more ways to win than a standard accumulator. A Lucky 15 uses both your acca and your singles as well as producing trebles and doubles that reward you for correctly calling 2/4 or 3/4 of your selections. To cover the 15 separate bets, a Lucky 15 uses your stake 15 times. If you were to place £1 on a Lucky 15, you would be staking £15 in total across the various bets.
