IT’S BEEN an exciting week so far, to the extent that I fell asleep last night before finishing my tips for today. Nothing to do with the drink I promise…
So we had another two winners yesterday tipped at 12-1 (Living in the Past) and 5-2 (Search for a Song) whilst Agincourt (12-1) battled well but was beaten in a photo finish. Nice each way return though and we go again today.

WESTERN DUKE is a lovely big price in the opening race. A change of tactics last time saw him win nicely from off the pace. He should have a strong pace to aim at again today and I fancy him to be involved at a big price. Take the 6 places on offer with Paddy Power or William Hill.

This is the race of the day for me because I love these classy staging types. Stradivarius is the reigning champ and he has seen off all comers in his last EIGHT races no less, including DEE EX BEE on the last two of those occasions. However there is a logical reason to suggest that the form can be reversed today. Stradivarius has to carry a 3lb penalty that Dee Ex Bee doesn’t have and in theory that should be enough to give Dee Ex Bee the edge. They are both hardy types and it is of course entirely possible that Stradivarius just does enough to beat him again but at the prices I think we have to be with Dee Ex Bee. I’m taking the unusual step of recommending an each way bet on him despite only being 7-2. The reason for this is that we get 1/4 odds for first or second place and the other three rivals aren’t up to the level of the top two. It’s going to surely be a shoot out and the each way bet let’s us get our stake back if we just miss out to the favourite. Too many of these ‘snidey’ each way bets will annoy your friendly bookmaker which tells you that they favour the punter so take advantage when you can.

I’m taking a chance each way here with SPARTAN FIGHTER who is a bit of an unknown quantity at this level having won two races nicely at a lower level. My trust in Danny Tudhope is unequivocal so let’s have a pop each way here and see if the horse is good enough. Ladbrokes and Coral have a generous 4 places on offer so let’s say thanks very much to that and get involved.

In the lucky last I am very surprised to see SPIRIT WARNING quoted at prices like 20-1. He won well at Windsor last time and his jockey takes off 5lb which helps to offset the penalty he gets for that win. It’s another step up but he looks in with a good chance to me. I’ll go for the slightly lower price to get the extra place each way in this way but that’s a personal preference really.
I’ve backed Dee Ex Bee e/w as per tip above… but with a NR the bet has been changed to a single (only 4 runners) and is now a loser when it would have effectively been stake returned… should the e/w half not have been refunded?
Get in bataash. Best horse in the race, easy work for Crowley. Nice
