Good morning all,
I firstly apologise for the late post. I’ve just landed in Liverpool to watch my beloved Everton get a spanking later from Chelsea.
Given I had to get the early flight over from Belfast I’ve decided to jump on with a couple of selections. Bare in mind, this study was done in the local McDonald’s with a double sausage and egg McMuffin in one hand and my phone in the other hand. Maybe it’s a good sign… Only time will tell!
King Of Stars – Ascot 2:10 – 5/1 EW
This is a cracking and competitive race and you could argue cases for many in the field.
The one that caught my eye was the Mick Appleby-trained King Of Stars who will be ridden by Takeshi Yokoyama. Now I’m not going to sit here and pretend I know much about this lad as a jockey as my main area of tipping knowledge including jockeys and stables is solely UK based.
However, I did do a bit of reading up on him and he seems to be one of the main jockeys from the Japanese side of racing.
The Mick Appleby yard is in decent nick currently. King Of Stars ticked a lot of boxes for me. He will be suited by a stiff 5f track like Ascot, he’ll get his preferred quicker ground and he’s quick!
He went a bit too hard last time out and was caught in the later stages of the race but it was still a great effort. I can see similar tactics being used today. That said, tactics being ridden prominently with the pace or from the front whilst trying to keep a little extra petrol in the tank for the final furlong.
Some would argue 5/1 isn’t a good each-way bet but in this case I think going each way is a smart move. Some bookmakers pay 4 places and given the competitiveness of the race if he places you’ll get your money back which is better than a kick in the balls as they say!
I’ve seen on the racing cards today a lot of riders from outside the UK taking rides on UK horses within the UK itself. I’m not sure on the occasion or what the story is behind it but it’s nice to see and gives you the opportunity to get to know some other top jockeys from around the world.
Mr McCann- 2:25 – Haydock – 7/2
Electrical Storm is probably a worthy favourite to win this race given the fashion of his success at York in June after a whopping 551 days of the track. He followed up that win at York with a decent 3rd at Sandown in a class 2 handicap.
All that aside I’ve opted for Mr McCann and here is the reason why. On paper, this race screams tactical. I can see this becoming quite messy. There are quite a few in the field who like to be ridden quite patiently and dropped in.
Given Mr McCann has won from the front on 2 out of 3 of his career wins, one of which was at this particular track I think he’s a decent bet. Tom Marquand is the perfect jockey booking for this particular horse in my opinion and I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t try to take them all from the front here.
Furthermore, he’s been dropped a handy 3l by the handicapper for his recent outing and I don’t think this particular field of runners is tougher than what he’s ran against on his previous few runs. In particular, the race at Chester in the Dee Stakes which I’m more than happy to draw a line through as he was upped to 1m2f and he clearly didn’t stay the trip.
If given an early lead, he’ll definitely you a run for your money.
Good luck today everyone with this Saturday's racing action!
