Yesterday's sole selection Toro Strike did strike at Goodwood in the feature, and provided us with a nice win at a drifted price of 7/2. It was a drop down in class for that horse, and even though he was outpaced in the early stages, when he hit top gear he was impressive. Today we have two selections at Ripon on what is a pretty poor Bank Holiday in terms of quality.
Ripon 2:30
A return to a quicker surface will see BARYSHNIKOV have a better chance after running well on Good To Soft ground last time, where he ran well, but his best form comes on a faster surface. His run lto was a good effort in a Class 2 race, where he wasn't completely out of his depth, but a drop back in Class 3 will definitely be more his bag. The form of that race lto has worked out quite well with the 2nd since running well in a Group 3 and the 4th won a Class 2 in his most recent run. He finished ahead of Benadalid, and I can't envisage him reversing the form, even though he is back at his favourite track, as he would probably be better on a slower surface.
His runs before his most run showed the great level of form he is in. He was 2nd to a horse called Platinumcard, losing by a neck, and that horse has gone on to win twice since, including a win over Howzer Black. When the compare the finishing distances between Howzer Black and Baryshnikov it works in favour of the selection. Baryshnikov was giving away 7lbs to the winner but was only beaten a neck. Howzer Black was 4lbs lighter than the winner and lost by a neck, which means on collateral form the 3lbs between those two horses it's hard to see Howzer Black coming ahead.
As for the others in the race, Myristica will be the main danger, in my opinion. The 3yo Tim Easterby runner is still slightly unexposed and gets the 3yo weight for age allowance, and is a course and distance winner.
Ripon 3:40
This is a tight affair with many of the horses in the race sharing form with each other, and I'm siding with one of those. GARDEN OASIS gets my vote for David Allan and Tim Easterby.
There is a chance that Garden Oasis can get an uncontested lead, if he breaks well from stall 1. His main rivals for the pace will be Challet, who is drawn in stall 8 and possibly the Mark Johnston runner, Marie's Diamond, drawn in 7. If allowed to get an easy lead, I think they will find it a difficult task to pass this lad. David Allan is arguably the best pilot around Ripon, and has a very good strike rate when riding 4yo+, and is tactically very good when riding from the front. David Allan has a 24% SR when riding 4yo+ at this track, which equals a +34.88 profit to £1 level stakes.
This horse has close form with Kettle Hill, who he beat at York, and also Copper And Five, who have both beaten each other in their recent runs. Kettle Hill will be fancied in the market, due to the fact he was running on strongly at York, and is a William Haggas runner. The reason I'm siding with Garden Oasis is because he appears to be a very game horse, who is tough to pass when hitting the front. If he is always in front, then that could be a tough task for the horses in behind, and I recommend watching his most recent win against Copper And Five, who had plenty of time and chances to go past Garden Oasis, but never succeeded.
